Cast copper alloy Roman T-shaped brooch, with red enamel still intact in the circular settings on the bow of the brooch. The three settings are surrounded by raised and moulded diamond shaped frames, lined up in a vertical row, and defined by raised ridges either side of each point. The wings have two linear parallel incisions at each end. The hinge and pin (37 mm long) survive in their entirety, but the foot of the brooch and the catchplate are missing. Hattatt (2000) illustrates similar examples on page 303, Fig.162, Nos.908, 386 and 28, which are dated from the 1st to the 2nd cen…

Base fragment of a large cast copper alloy bell which has broken along the slit between two circular holes, producing a 'dumbbell' shape in plan, with half of one of those holes still extant. Above the slit is an incised linear border and part of the semi-circular 'sun', around the maker's initial 'R' with an annulet on either side, with linear rays emanating from it, decorating part of this half of the sphere. Each ray consists of two or three parallel incised lines, which may have curved into a rounded terminal, but these are now missing. There would have been a metal ball clapper w…

Copper alloy stater of South Western uninscribed type minted by the Durotriges of Dorset and Somerset in the first century AD. British Museum Catalogue Type: 2810; ABC 2175; Van Arsdell Type: 1290-1, which is dated from 30 BC to AD 10, but current thinking now dates them from the first half of the 1st century AD. Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper alloy finger ring, probably Roman in date, consisting of a flat strip of metal bent into a penannular ring with both terminals narrowing to a point and overlapping slightly. The pointed ends suggest this could have been used as an earring, but they may also simply be narrowed to fit together when worn on the finger and penannular to allow for expansion. The ring may also been made from a broken fragment of a bracelet which are often penannular in the Roman period. The outer face of the hoop is decorated with three horizontal concentric grooves which converge towards the ends …

Silver long cross penny of Edward I (1272-1307), Class 4a (1282-1283), London mint. The crown is trifoliate, which places it in Classes 1-9. The obverse inscription is +EDW R'ANGL'DNS hYB, which eliminates Class 1a-c, as the contracted form EDW R began with Class 1d. The face is wide with long hair and the drapery at the neck is composed of two shallow wedges. The ornaments between the fleurs are spearheads, and there is a short beaded line above the forehead below the band of the crown. The S in CIVITAS is egg-waisted and there are large, comma-shaped contraction marks which suggests…

Cast lead spindle whorl, circular in plan and sub-rectangular in profile and section, with a neat circular hole that is 8.4 mm in diameter. Both surfaces are pitted with circular indentations that average about 1 mm in diameter. These are seen locally on ceramic spindle whorls but lead whorls are not normally decorated in Cornwall, but this find is from Dorset and was found with other Roman artefacts. Experimental work with spindle whorls show that flat and symmetrical examples like this work best for spinning and holding the wool. Bishop (1996) illustrates a flat and pitted lead s…

Cast copper alloy Roman seal box lid, lozenge-shaped in plan with cross-hatching of twenty-five lozenge-shaped cells for enamel. Some light blue-green enamel survives in a few of the cells. The four corners of the lozenge shape have knops projecting from them which are now worn. These knops would have originally fitted into notches in the base half of the seal box. The sides of this lid survive, and are at right angles to the lid. Similar lozenge-shaped seal box lids have been discovered in Sutton, Suffolk (see SF-ADC726) and in Aldworth, Berkshire (see BERK-2698F3). Bishop (199…
