Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete cast copper alloy strap end of medieval date. The strap end is roughly rectangular in shape with a tapering, squared off terminal to one end. To the opposite end, despite being broken, the remains of two rivet holes can be seen. One face of the strap end is decorated with an incised zoomorphic image, possibly that of a dragon, though the design is very crude. The reverse is undecorated. The metal is a dark brownish-green colour and survives in good condition. The strap end is 49.4mm wide and weighs 1.2g.
