30 small and abraded sherds of medieval pottery recovered during casual fieldwalking from a single field in Sandford Orcas. In general the sherds vary in size from 46.51mm x 33.53mm x 6.11mm thick (9.96g) to 9.99mm x 9.49mm x 4.94mm thick (0.49g). Of the 30 sherds only 4 are rim sherds and two are base sherds. The rims tend to be flattened and the bases flat. Seven sherds of Black Burnished Ware pottery dating from the 1st to 4th centuries AD. The sherds include a Greyhound Yard type 63 jar rim, slightly flared with external raised ridge on neck and lid seat on interior surface. The fabric is grey and sandy with surfaces burnished dark grey/black. Date range for this type of rim is 250-400AD. Five badly abraded sherds of Romano-British Black Burnished Ware pottery two of which may be datable to the 1st-2nd centuries AD, the remainder only to the 1st-4th centuries AD. Two rim sherds are of variant fabric 1Bi, deriving from the South Somerset/ East Devon region. They have a grey core and oxidised orange or brown interior surfaces with black slip applied to the exterior surface and burnished. 1 very small and badly abraded rim sherd of Roman Samian pottery datable from the 2nd to mid 3rd centuries AD. It is an upright beaded rim, possibly from a hemispherical bowl (Webster, 1996, 47-8, type 37). Only a very small fragment of the orange-brown slip survives on the external surface. The fabric is light orange in colour and relatively poorly fired. It may have been manufactured in the East Gaul region. It measures 17.61 x 14.60 x 4.65mm thick (1.44g).

A barley twist handle fragment from a late medieval or early post medieval vessel. The broadly cylindrical fragment measures 66mm in length by 28.7mm in diameter and weighs 46.21g. It has an oxidised orange surface and a reduced grey core. The fabric contains abundant fine rounded quartz sand and occasional darker orange iron oxide. There are patches of a light brownish-green lead glaze in the recesses. This is probably a product of one of the South Somerset production centres.

A small abraded body sherd of Romano-British Black Burnished Ware datable only to the 1st-3rd centuries AD. The fabric is dark grey in colour with a brown-grey internal and brown external surface. Inclusions include frequent fine quartz, moderate angular flint (<3mm), and occasional iron. The surfaces may have a patchy dark grey slip. It is probably of Greyhound Yard variant fabric 1Bi, possibly deriving from the East Devon/South Somerset region during the 1st-3rd centuries AD. The sherd measures 30.23 x 20.80 x 5.67mm thick and weighs 4.68g.

An abraded base sherd of post-medieval South Somerset ware probably dating from the 17th-18th centuries. The fabric has a light orange core with buff surfaces and margins. Inclusions include frequent very fine quartz (0.1mm), and occasional iron. The surfaces may have originally been glazed (although no trace survives) or wiped. It is probably of Donyatt fabric DPT7 and derives from a vessel with a low pedestal base. The sherd measures 47.56 x 48.19 x 9.36mm thick and weighs 31.57g.

A very small abraded sherd of Roman Mortaria, possibly deriving from the Rhineland region in the 2nd century AD. The fabric is fine but slightly sandy to the touch. It is light orange throughout with a thin slight purplish core. core. Inclusions consist of moderate very fine white mica and occasional iron. The trituration grits are sub angular white and red quartz (<3.5mm). The sherd measures 14.41 x 12.56 x 5.74mm thick and weighs 1.01g.

A small base angle sherd from a medieval cooking pot dating from the 11th-12th century AD. The fabric is oxidised patchy orange-brown in colour with a grey internal slip. Inclusions consist of frequent fine rounded quartz (<0.5mm), moderate larger sub-rounded to sub-angular quartz (<2.5mm), occasional angular flint and sub-rounded oolitic limestone (<4mm). Probably of local origin and similar to some Ilchester fabrics. It measures 41.62mm long x 24.28mm wide x 5.78mm thick, and weighs 7.69g.

The leg of a cast copper alloy cooking vessel, either a cauldron, a posnet or a skillet, of medieval or post medieval date. The leg measures 60.6mm by 35.8mm by 16.4mm and weighs 104g. It has a flat D-shaped cross-section with a flat front and trapezoidal facetted back. The front face has a central projecting vertical rib. The leg widens towards the flattish sub-pentagonal base. It would have been one of three on a complete vessel.

A single small body sherd of post-medieval lead glazed earthenware dating from the 17th-18th century. The fabric is light orange in colour with very fine inclusions of rounded quartz (<0.1mm) and occasional iron oxide. The fabric is typical of pottery produced at Donyatt in South Somerset. The glaze is well formed and greenish-amber in colour. The sherd measures 35.07mm long, 24.14mm wide, 5.87mm thick and weighs 5.60g.

Part of a leg from a cast copper alloy cooking vessel of medieval or post-medieval date. The leg measures 37.2mm in length, 33mm in width and 16.7mm in thickness. It weighs 71g. The cross-section is D-shaped, with a flat undecorated back and a curving front with five vertical ribs. The D-shaped base is fairly flat and is at a sixty degree angle to the rest of the leg. Part of a leg from a cast copper alloy cooking vessel of medieval or post-medieval date. The leg measures 41.6mm in length, 27.6mm in width and 14mm in thickness. It weighs 58.3g. The cross-section is D-shaped, with a flat undecorated back and a curving front with five slight vertical ribs. The D-shaped base is rounded. From the base the leg starts to narrow but widens again after about 26mm. Just above this wider section the break has occurred. The leg would have been one of three on the complete vessel. Its dimensions and hoof-like form suggest that it came from a post-medieval skillet.

A worn and incomplete leg from a cast copper alloy cooking vessel of medieval or post-medieval date. The leg measures 45.9mm in length, 31.8mm in width and 14.2mm in thickness. It weighs 73g. The cross-section is a long oval with slightly pointed ends. The back appears to have three slight facets (although one side is damaged) and the front appears to have a low and wide vertical rib in its centre. The break is concave. The leg would have been one of three on the complete vessel.
