A fragment of cast copper alloy jug handle. A curvilinear/leaf-shaped lower terminal escutcheon with relief decoration of two human feet. There are traces of solder at the back where the escutcheon would have attached to the body of the jug and the surface is keyed by diagonal scoring to improve adherance. The escutcheon is slightly curved to accomodate the curve of the jug to which it was attached. Date: Roman - possibly 1st to 2nd century Dimensions: 49.33 mm x 33.59 mm x 5.67 mm Weight: 21.62 g

A possible vessel foot. Cast copper alloy. The object has an oval cross section, is waisted and has a rounded bi-lobed terminal. In overall shape it is reminiscent of a bone from mammal phalanges (finger or toe bone). The surface of the other terminal is irregular and rough suggesting this was attached to another object, possibly as a foot for a vessel or other object. Date: Possibly Roman, but it could be as late as Post Medieval Dimensions: 16.09 mm x 14.25 mm x 11.99 mm Weight: 8.21 g

The broken terminal end of a Roman copper alloy patera (skillet) handle. The sides of the handle taper towards the break with a double grooved linear border on either side. The terminal of the handle is circular with a beaded border running around its circumference, the centre is pierced for suspension and also has a beaded rim around its edge. A good parallel for this handle is provided by a complete vessel from Gloucestershire recorded on the database as GLO-048BB1. The handle would originally have been cast as one with the vessel. The object is a vessel lid. It is sub circular in plan, with a sub-semi circular platform protruding from one edge. There are at least 5 very small angular protrusions which are probably decorative. The upper surface is slightly convex, the under surface is concave. Only the upper surface is decorated. The decoration is in the form of ‘ring and dots’ forming a border around the edge, and an inner circle which has trefoils of ‘ring and dot’ designs in the centre. A copper alloy jug, with one handle. One of three containers for the Dorchester hoard found in 1936 (IARCH-5E5FEF). It was recorded as having a height of 1 foot 3/4 inches and a diameter at the top of 4 3/4 in. and at the base 4 in. Its maximum diameter was 7 inches. The handle was decorated with a vine branch and attached to the rim by two duck's beaks and to the body by a Silenus mask. Elements of the decoration were picked out in silver inlay. An incomplete copper alloy vessel foot dating to the Roman period (AD 43-410). The object is pelta shaped in plan, D shape in section, with a crescent shaped outer edge with two semi-circular cut out sections (biconcave) that create projecting outer 'arms' on each side of the object and a middle projection. A cast copper alloy Roman vessel foot, probably from a bucket. These items were used in sets of three to protect the bases of Roman cast or sheet bronze vessels, in particular buckets (Jackson 1990, 46). The foot has a slightly curving rectangular shape, which would have corresponded to the size of the base of the vessel it supported.
