Cast copper alloy fragment. What remains of this is triangular in shape with a wide ridge running centrally along its length from the apex. The ridge then splits to form a semicircular ridge around an aperture the same shape. This would have been circular originally but the object is now broken at this point. Above this is a crude oval terminal (10x6x3mm), perpendicular to the projection, and pierced at its centre (3.5mm in diameter). Below the square three corners (one has broken and is missing) extend downwards c.10mm in a 90degree arrangement and are roughly pointed. At the mid point of two sides is a similar, one-dimensional, triangular…

A folded fragment of sheet gold strip with a narrower strip threaded through and wrapped. Maximum length 13mm; width of wider strip 6mm; thickness 3mm as folded; width of narrow strip 2.5mm; weight 1.43 grams. Non-destructive X-ray fluorescence analysis of the surface indicated a gold content for both of 86-89%, a silver content of 8-10% and at least 1% copper. Though the analysis does not rule out an ancient date, the piece is an undiagnostic fragment which cannot be assigned to a cultural or chronological context. Due to the undiagnostic nature of the find it can not be securely date…

A circular domed convex object cast in copper alloy of probable post-medieval date. The artefact has a globular knop at its summit. From this emanate five curved ridges delineated by grooves emulating a star pattern. There is a groove around the circumference of the upper surface at the base. At one point on the circumference of the base is a vestigial rectangular protrusion suggesting that this object would have once been part of a larger item. The piece has corroded to a dusty light/mid-green colour.

Late Saxon/Early medieval gold thread found during an archaeological excavation by AC Archaeology in 2009. A single tiny fragment of gold thread was recovered during the process of soil sampling of the fill of a small pit or post hole F328, which also contained a small quantity (12 sherds) of late Saxon/early Medieval pottery and two iron nails. The thread measures 3.5mm in length and less than 1mm in thickness. The fragment of gold thread from Barton Hill would therefore qualify as Treasure under two of the stipulated criteria of the Treasure Act: it is more than 300 years old and…
