A fragment of a copper alloy tap handle or key. The top only of a bifurcated handle remaining. The two arms of the handle have an irregular lozengiform cross section. They are arched and each terminates in a flat-ended trapezoidal knop. THe remnant of the shaft of the handle is oval in cross section and terminates in a jagged break. A copper alloy barrel tap with stylised zoomorphic decoration, The tap comprises a curving tube, constricted and tapering at one end and expanding into a stylised animal head with projectiong spout at the other. The tapered end is closed would have been inserted into a barrel. It has a small rectangular aperture on the side to allow the liquid in the barrel to pass into the tube of the tap when turned upwards (with the curving tube and spout pointing downwards). A complete cast copper alloy barrel tap key (handle) of the post-Medieval to modern date, circa1700 - 1900. The key has an oval bow,circular-sectioned stem and hollow bit with triangular cross section.. The key has an even green patina and is in fine condition. Length of key: 55.72 mm. Width of bow 33.79 mm. Bit: 11.88 mm x 14.01 mm. Weight: 21 grams.
