An incomplete copper-alloy post-medieval (1600-1700) strap fitting or dress hook, probably from a sword belt or baldrick. The tag would have had a separate back plate and looped attachment, both now missing. The hook is missing its tip. The plate is circular, domed with three longitudinal facets and hollow to the reverse. One end has a circular attachment-knop with central in situ iron rivet (2.8mm diameter) and smaller finial knop, extending from a transverse rib. From the opposite end extends a solid transverse ridge with a 4.1mm diameter copper alloy rivet head to the reverse, hol…

A Post-Medieval copper alloy strap fitting, probably part of a sword belt, probably dating to AD 1500-1700. The fitting consists of a sub-rectangular plate, with an indented upper edge and tapering into a rearward facing blunt hook; this retains a separate copper alloy loop. The plate is perforated twice on the longitudinal median line, both retaining iron corrosion from probable iron rivets. Incised lines define a transverse collar surmounting the hook. Dimensions: length 32.5mm; width 13.7mm; thickness 2.9mm; diameter of loop 11.8mm; weight 5g. cf. Margeson (1993: 39, no. 25…

A complete copper-alloy strap distributor, bent to one side at one end (c. 10th-11th century). It is formed of two opposing strap loops, broadly triangular, with external recessed strap bars, which are connected by a central moulded animal head. The animal is viewed en face and is cat like, with small, slightly pointed ears, and two converging curved ridges which form both the eyebrows and nose; they do not meet. In profile the animal head can be seen to have gaping jaws. Emerging from the jaws, mirrored behind each ear, is an outcurving tendril. These have bevelled sides. On the …

A worn and corroded copper-alloy strap-fitting of medieval date. The artefact has a sub D-shaped frame with central internal projection from its outer edge. The incurved outer edge effectively consists of a pair of semicircles which converge in this projection which terminates in a slightly expanded knob. The front of the object is bevelled slightly both externally and internally on the front; the reverse is flat. Around the bar part of a sheet plate has been retained; since it is partial the artefact can be considered incomplete, although the frame is an intact component. The plate i…
