A copper-alloy Late Iron Age to Early Roman strap fitting, strap-union or belt-link dating to 300 BC - AD 100. From the rear the object has a solid 8-shaped design, with a bar on either side around which leather straps would have been attached. The 8-shape is comprised of two conjoined plano-convex discs of 19.0mm diameter, although through being compressed together they each measure 17.9mm in length from the join to the outer edge. At the front there is another central disc positioned above the waist of the 8 and compressed into it. Each of the three discs is decorated at the front wi…

A complete Medieval cast copper alloy bar mount with a pendent loop, dating to c.AD 1300 to 1400. The bar mount is sub-rectangular in plan, D-shaped in cross section and measures 15.4 mm in length. It widens from the top to the centre and then narrow to end. A single copper alloy rivet holds the bar and its folded end forming a suspension loop to hang the pendent. The pendent loop is an openwork quatrefoil with a D-shaped cross section. It measures 20.5 mm in width and 3.9 mm in thickness at the top. Three lobes have decorative circular knops projecting from their centre. The remain l…

A complete Post Medieval cast copper alloy sword belt fitting dating to AD 1500 to 1700. The fitting consists of a plate with a hook-end at one attachment end.
The integral hook projects upwards from the centre of the top and curves forwards. It has a convex outer side and a flatter inner side ad measures 3.3 mm in thickness. The hook thins and widens towards the plate. The plate is M shaped in plan with straight upper edge rounded upper corners, vertical sides which are convex at the top then concave in the lower part and pointed outwards lower corners. Also the centre of the lowe…

A large fragment of a broken post-medieval copper-alloy strap-fitting, probably a sword belt hanger/mount dating to c. 1500-1650. The strap-fitting would probably have had three suspension loops from which a trio of hooked plates would have hung, and with a trefoliate terminal (knop) at either end. The other terminal and two of the loops and all hooked plates are missing.
The fragment consists of the one end of the mount, just under half of the complete object, including one surviving attachment loop (that which would originally have been at the mount's centre). The mount terminate…

A medieval cast copper-alloy bar mount in the form of a central circular element flanked by two small sub-rectangular, squared off ends. The centre is domed with a concave reverse and convex front, while the terminal elements are thinner and D-shaped or trapezoidal in cross-section. The ends each have a pierced hole though the centre, one clear, the other containing either corrosion product, solder or the remains of a rivet, giving the reverse a recessed effect; at the front this material is flush with the mount and its slighly paler and browner shade suggests a different alloy. The f…

Description:
An Early Medieval cast gilded silver mount, probably a strap-slide, decorated in the Winchester Style. The mount is sub-hexagonal in plan, with a flat reverse. The design on the front is moulded in high relief, comprising a symmetrical pair of addorsed birds looking backwards. Their wings curve downwards into the mouth of an inverted animal mask, before passing out of its ears to terminate in a volute at each lower corner of the mount. A trilobed acanthus frond issues from the animal mask's mouth, filling the space between the bir…

A Post-Medieval copper alloy strap fitting, probably dating to c. AD 1500-1700. The strap fitting consists of a sub-rectangular sheet of copper alloy tapering from an attachment end with rounded corners and a central indentation to the hooked terminal. This is deliniated by a slightly flanged transverse collar from which projects the rearward curving hook, which has a very shallow D-shaped cross section. The fitting is undecorated, and has two rivet holes on the longitudinal median line, both containing iron corrosion. A small copper alloy ring with a D-shaped cross section remains su…

An Early Medieval to Medieval copper alloy belt, casket or book-hasp, probably dating to c. AD 1000-1100. The object is broadly sub-rectangular in form tapering from 7.8mm to 5.2mm, where it ends in a rounded terminal. It is generally D-shaped cross section but with the terminal flattened. Through this flattened section runs a circular rivet hole with the remains of an iron rivet still in situ. Above the rivet the cross section widens into a raised band, which is in turn surmounted by a pair of arches in decoration which is probably zoomorphic in character, the arches representing the…

One half of a Post Medieval two part toggle clasp, possibly from a sword belt of 16th to 17th century date. This part is the section with a bar and knop which would have fitted through an eye on the other section. The object is mainly flat and has a thickness of 1.8mm although the thickened knop at one end has a thickness of 3.8mm. It has a central circular aperture flanked on either side by a three projecting knops, the central one larger. Immediately to each side of this section is a narrower 'waisted' section. The waist towards the attachment end has the rusted remains of an iron r…

An incomplete copper alloy zoomorphic belt hook or strap fitting dating to the period c.AD 1550 - 1750. The strap fitting is S-shaped, with a central boss consisting of a moulded collar flanked by leaves. One arm of the S now ends in a worn break just below the boss. The remaining arm ends in a dragon or sea creature head with a brow ridge and crest, pointed nose and open jaw and is curved down to nearly meet the central boss.
The belt hook is stylistically similar to a dragon or a sea creature as opposed to the more common snake design. The earliest snake-form fasteners appear o…

A fragment of a Post Medieval cast copper-alloy hooked mount. The mount has broken across one of the pierced rivet holes and only the top third of it now remains; the lower part with the hook is missing. The mount is trapezoid in shape, wider at the complete end which is bicurvate, ie had two convex lobes separated by a central indent. The back of the mount is concave and the front is very slightly convex. There would have been two rivet holes and the remaining complete hole has iron corroded in it. The mount is now 14.5mm long, 12.2mm wide and 1.5mm thick and weighs 1.13g.

Medieval cast copper alloy strap slider, c.1150-1400 AD. The slider consists of a single, trapezoidal loop with a pair of opposed internal triangular projections about a quarter of the way up the sides of the frame. The sides of the frame are rectangular in section apart from the upper edge which has a rounded top. The longest side of the frame (the upper side) is 24.7mm long. It measures 20.4mm long on the bottom edge, 17.9mm wide and 2.8mm thick. It weighs 1.85 grams.
Egan and Pritchard (1991: 234) illustrate a number of similar examples, including ref. 1256 and ref. 1259 which th…

A copper alloy probable strap end/fitting, likely to be of Post-Medieval date. The object is comprised of a rectangular sheet of metal, both ends folded into the centre, presumably to secure a strap. There are five rivet holes, one at each corner and one in the centre, three of which still contain what appear to be crude, handmade copper alloy rivets. The object is slightly bent out of shape and cracked in places.
