Sheet copper alloy folded staple, now rectangular in plan but originally diamond-shaped with two pointed ends which have been folded twice to come back on themselves. This creates a layer between the folds that can be inserted into both broken edges of a copper alloy vessel in order to mend the hole.
Egan (2005) illustrates a similar folded staple on page 101, fig.87, diagram a and lists others in nos.460-463, which are dated from the 16th to the 17th century.
