An incomplete Medieval to Post-Medieval sheet copper alloy dagger scabbard chape dating to c. AD 1300-1600. This example is made from a copper alloy sheet, about 0.75mm thick, that has been rolled into a broadly conical shape with an overlapping, soldered join on the reverse. The terminal of the chape is open, with a slightly projecting knop. The chape is decorated with three longitudinal incised lines, with two sub-lozengiform sewing loops at the attachment end. A gold strap fitting from a scabbard or sword-belt, set with cloisonné garnet and opaque pale blue glass over pointillé gold foil. The strap mount is in the form of a truncated pyramid with squared-off edges. The top and the lower edge of one side of the fitting are damaged and the cell work is slightly distorted. The surface is also partially covered with earth making it sometimes difficult to assess if cells are empty or not. The object has broken just beyond the return of the fold following old damage. The chape has an external trefoil corner protection, in from which a rivet hole is located; the rivet is missing. A broken and incomplete copper-alloy scabbard chape of medieval date, missing its side arms which would have been connected to each other via a perforated terminal loop. The fitting is zoomorphic, representing a winged animal in profile, probably a bird, whose head is at the arm end of the base plate. It was formed from a single plate that has been folded in half. A copper alloy sheet metal chape, probably from a scabbard for a dagger. The chape is formed of a rectangular piece of sheet metal rolled into a cone, folded to close the apex. The sheet overlaps at the back and is not apparently soldered or riveted. The upper edge the sheet has been shaped front and back to create an in-curve on both faces with points at the sides. The end has been closed by folding a tab of the sheet metal over it. There are traces of iron corrosion at the apex. A tinned copper alloy Bronze Age tongue-shaped scabbard chape dating to the period c. 1100 - 800 BC. The chape is triangular in shape with a sub-oval knop at the base. The mouth of the chape is lozengiform. The triangular body features a circular perforation through both sides of the body which retains a cylindrical copper alloy rivet, the terminals of which retain a substantial amount of tinning. The knop at the base features a rough sub-circular perforation as the result of old damage. The chape is hollow with a depth of c. 33.31mm. Cf. SWYOR-4A2F62 for a similar example.
