A copper alloy composite scabbard chape. It is asymmetrical with a straight side to the right and a convex curved side to the left which meet at a point at the base, giving the chape a sub-triangular shape. There is a rounded knop projecting from the point at the base. It has short right-angled sides and edges are rounded where they meet the front. The angled top edge is scalloped. On the front it is decorated with a moulded diagonal ridge on running parallel to and just below the top edge. Below it are three circular holes arranged in a triangle. The separate&…

There is no basal knop as is commonly found, but a vertical band of cable pattern above the basal point, above which are three open work circles and a longitudinal slit. Above this is a transverse band of cabling with a panel of further open work circles and three fleur de lys knops at the upper rim. The back of the chape is in place, held by the folded edge of the front face, but is crushed inwards. A sma…

A complete copper-alloy sword or dagger scabbard . The chape is formed of sheet metal. It is has a transverse fold at the base, creating a trapezoidal plate on either side. Above this the sheet has been cut away on both faces to form two diverging arms along each side. The arms have expanded, rounded ends with circular attachment holes though them. One arm has two such holes next to each other. The trapeziodal plates at the base are decorated, each having a central circular notch at the upper edge and incised line decoration of a simple saltire on one face and a pattern of two groups …

A post-medieval copper-alloy sword or dagger chape, dating to AD 1600 - 1700. It is largely constructed of copper alloy sheet which has been bent and folded with a single folded, soldered seam running longitudinally along the mid line of one face. The chape is triangular and tapers to a the slightly truncated apex where there is a separately attached loop. At the open end, it is rectangular in cross-section. At the rim of the open end is a separately attached thin sheet of copper-alloy which is decorated with three parallel circumferential grooves. The main body of the chape is decorat…

The front face is convex and the rear is hollowed. The upper edge is damaged but traces remain of a scalloped edge. There is openwprk decoration comprising of two apatures of indeterminate form due to a combination of breaks and miscasting. At the terminal of the chape is a small angular knop. The edge of the back of the chape has a wide seam to enable soldering to the back plate, now missing. T…

A copper alloy sheet metal chape, probably from a scabbard for a dagger. The chape is formed of a rectangular piece of sheet metal rolled into a cone, folded to close the apex. The sheet overlaps at the back and is not apparently soldered or riveted. The upper edge the sheet has been shaped front and back to create an in-curve on both faces with points at the sides. The end has been closed by folding a tab of the sheet metal over it. There are traces of iron corrosion at the apex.

A broken and incomplete copper-alloy scabbard chape of medieval date, missing its side arms which would have been connected to each other via a perforated terminal loop. The fitting is zoomorphic, representing a winged animal in profile, probably a bird, whose head is at the arm end of the base plate. It was formed from a single plate that has been folded in half. The animal's tail is at the bend. The ends of the plate have been riveted together and are in the shape of the animal's head; the rivet survives and appears to have been made of a different alloy. There is a sub-triangular…

This example is made from a copper alloy sheet, about 0.75mm thick, that has been rolled into a broadly conical shape with an overlapping, soldered join on the reverse. The terminal of the chape is open, with a slightly projecting knop. The chape is decorated with three longitudinal incised lines, with two sub-lozengiform sewing loops at the attachment end.

Read comments that styles and shapes being so similar, it is difficult to tell whether detached scabbard chapes belonged to swords or daggers.

An incomplete copper-alloy openwork fitting, probably a scabbard chape. It is rectangular with decoration on the front face. At the right hand side the vertical edge curves around to project backwards. This probably indicates that the chape was folded over with the plate extending along the back. There are two circular attachment holes: one in the centre of the straight lower edge, the other in the corner without the folded side. The upper edge is irregular. The openwork apertures and surface decoration of lines and dots delineate a zoomorphic design of a four-legged beast facing righ…

Medieval copper-alloy scabbard chape. The chape is thin, probably cut and moulded sheet. The lower part is sub- triangular in plan with a squared off point. The front is flat with a prominent moulded raised rib running down the centre to the tip. The upper corners are bent backwards at right angles to the front. The triangular plate is decorated with regularly spaced incised diagonal lines running down the rib.To each side of the rib, symmetrically arranged a third and two thirds of the way down, are two groups of closely spaced lines of rocker arm (wrigglework) decoration, up to fo…

A copper-alloy bag-shaped chape. The chape is crescentic with an oval opening at the top, concave sides, a rounded, slightly flared bottom, and a perforation in each face. Each of there retains a small circular sectioned, domed rivet. There is a slight lip around the edges of the opening. Around the perforations the chape is decorated with a series of closely spaced moulded concentric circles (approximately ten on each face). The surface is corrodded in some areas, but is otherwise smooth with a greyish patina.

An incomplete medieval copper-alloy L-shaped scabbard chape. The chape is folded double to grip the leather scabbard which was held in place with two rivets. The object has broken just beyond the return of the fold following old damage. The chape has an external trefoil corner protection, in from which a rivet hole is located; the rivet is missing. The arm of the chape is set at a slightly oblique angle from the base. The extant arm's terminal is expanded and has a collar; it too has a rivet hole but no rivet. The outer surface of the chape is seemingly plain.
It measures 34mm by 3…

A copper alloy early medieval pyramid shaped mount, possibly from a scabbard, dating to the period c. AD 580 - 650. The mount is in the form of a square-based flat-topped pyramid with a square recess in the top, probably for a garnet or possibly glass setting. Each of the four faces are decorated with a design of two solid lozenges side by side, each surrounded with a concentric groove border, followed by a concentric ridge border. The area around is divided into a series of recessed triangles which may have contained an inlay. The reverse is hollow with an integral bar for strap atta…

A tinned copper alloy Bronze Age tongue-shaped scabbard chape dating to the period c. 1100 - 800 BC. The chape is triangular in shape with a sub-oval knop at the base. The mouth of the chape is lozengiform. The triangular body features a circular perforation through both sides of the body which retains a cylindrical copper alloy rivet, the terminals of which retain a substantial amount of tinning. The knop at the base features a rough sub-circular perforation as the result of old damage. The chape is hollow with a depth of c. 33.31mm.

The upper part is rectangular with two attachment holes flanking a harp-shaped central hole (the attachement hole on the right is larger than that on the left and there is a tear through it and in the metal above it). There is a transverse ridge decorated with incised diagonal lines delineating the base of thei rectangular section. The lower part widens out into a rounded, semi-circular shape. This part is decorated with radiating grooves and ridges. There are two holes in the up…
