A complete and misshapen cast lead cap for a powder measure. Originally, the open end would have been circular or perhaps oval in plan. The open end has a plain rim. The closed end of the cap is thicker than the sides and has a slightly raised rim around the top edge edge. Along one side is a raised casting seam with a slight projection, probably from a loop, now missing. The loop enabled the cap to be attached separately to the bandolier (belt) of the wearer so that they could be removed without being lost. The cap was used for measuring a charge of gunpowder and would have been part…

An incomplete lead post-medieval powder measure cap, c. 17th century AD.  The open end of the measure has been squashed inwards so that only the base retains its original sub-circular shape in plan. On one side a small loop survives, and the remains of the attachment are evident on the other side, though the loop is missing. There are two vertical lines cast into the measure, running from the open end to the base on opposite sides (and in between the loops).  Height: 14.98mm, diameter at base: 18.26mm, weight: 16.24g. Cf. Courtney, 1988: 2, fig. 3.

A Post-Medieval lead powder measure cap, dating to the period AD 1600-1700. The object comprises a oval base, with straight sides, giving the appearance of a cup. There are two surviving attachment loops at opposite ends of the cap on the long axis. It is creamy-grey in colour. The cap measures 17.15mm high, is 15.8mm wide, 26.1mm long and the material is 2.45mm thick. It weighs 19.5g.
