A complete copper-alloy pin dating from the Roman to medieval periods. The pin has a flat circular head, on which little decoration remains aside from a faint beaded border inset slightly from the edge on one face. Striations are present on both faces. The head narrows to a collar of two transverse mouldings, which are only present on the front, before extending to the shaft. The shaft is circular in cross-section and is bent just below the midway point. The pin measures 61.1mm in length, 2mm in diameter at the shaft, 14.8mm in diameter at the head, and 0.5mm in thickness at the …

Broad period: ROMAN
County: Dorset

An incomplete copper alloy fragment of probable Iron age or Roman date, possibly a pin head, probably dating to c. 100 BC-AD 410. The pin consists of an oblate spherical head, with a vestigial shank projecting from one side. There appears to be an incised circle at the apex of the head, although this is obscured by corrosion. Length: 11.0 mm; diameter: 13.80mm; thickness: 8.10mm; diameter of shaft: 2.70mm; weight: 6.95g. It is difficult to parallel such an undiagnostic object, however the patina and the bulk of material found in the vicinity would support a Roman date.

An incomplete copper-alloy early medieval zoomorphic pin dating to the 8th century. The shaft of the pin is circular in cross section, tapering a little from 2.50mm in diameter to 2mm in diameter in the length extant. The shaft of the pin has a sharp point at one end but this is probably the break, rather than the fulll extent of the original item. The terminal of the pin is in the form of a zoomorphic head, dog-like but with an extended snout. There is a small collar above which is the skull of the animal, roughly spherical, with a raised moulding of two sub-triangular features eithe…
