An incomplete lead medieval pilgrim's badge of St Anne, dating to c.1400-1500. Probably from her shrine at Buxton, Derbyshire, but relics of St Anne were also claimed by Canterbury, Reading and Durham, and so it may alternatively have been produced at one of these places. The badge depicts St Anne teaching her daughter, the Virgin Mary, to read. St Anne and the Virgin Mary are both depicted wearing long dresses or robes. St Anne is wearing a veil or headdress. The Virgin Mary is depicted as being slightly smaller than St Anne. On the reverse is a bent, long and tapering integral attac…

A copper alloy pilgrim badge. The openwork badge depicts a horse and rider in low relief. The rider is in armour and holding a lance. It is likely that this is a badge depicting St George slaying the dragon. This was a popular emblem in the late medieval period as his cult developed under Royal patronage.
