A Medieval iron barrel padlock case of Goodall's Type D (in Biddle, 1990), with a hinged shackle, locked and corroded in place. The spring and bolt are enclosed within the case. Barrel padlocks with shackles (Type D) were intended to secure human or animal limbs (Goodall 1990 p.1001). Examples from Winchester date from the late 10th to early 15th century.
The case is cylindrical and c.30mm in cross-section, widening to c.40mm diameter at the open end. The shackle (c.10.5mm diameter cross-section) is hinged at one end (to a projection from the case) and curves in an arc to the opposi…

A cast copper-alloy medieval barb-spring padlock. This example is complete as the internal iron fittings have corroded, fusing the normally detached and separately cast end to the main padlock case.
The padlock case is rectangular in section with flat short ends, one with the key hole and the other which would normally detach from the rest of the padlock case. The longer sides of the case have straight edges which curve out to the centre and then curve back in, creating an oval centre.
On the top face there are integrally cast projections projecting upwards at 90 degrees at each…
