A copper-alloy mount in the form of a lion couchant modelled in relief on the front face but flat on the rear face. The front face has a slightly melted appearance as though a blob of metal has been dropped on it, with consquent loss of some decorative detail. The front paws are placed together beneath the mouth and there is no other creature pinned down beneath them, as is normal in leonine knife handles and figurines (e.g. BH-2159D4 and SWYOR-F1D5D6). To what other object this piece was fixed is unknown. Dimensions: Length 35 mm, Height 18 mm, …

A late early-medieval openwork copper-alloy zoomorphic mount, possibly from a strap or horse harness, dating to the 11th century AD. The mount is in the form of an animal's head and is convex on the front and hollow on the reverse. At the mount's upper edge two small, rounded projections are placed in the corners to represent the animal's ears. The animal then has a protruding hemispherical face that has two recessed swirls at the top for the eyes and a flaring triangle in the centre for the nose. Above the eyes are shallowly moulded recurving curls connected…

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete cast copper alloy Iron Age or Roman mount dating to the period c. 300BC - AD 100. It is possibly a decorative shield clip, although it has also been suggested that this type of mount derives from a bucket, tankard or vessel. As this example contains remnants of iron decay in its interior, it has been suggested that it may originate from a bucket style vessel, akin to those of the Aylesford Swarling type (J. Ahmet pers.comm). It is formed of a single sheet of copper alloy which is now tubular in shape. It has a series of curving ridges which give it a sligh…

Post-Medieval cast copper alloy mount in the form of a flat openwork lozenge. The inner and outer edges are straight but bevelled with a flat front and back. A Medieval copper alloy bar mount, probably from a casket or chest, dating to c. AD 1200-1400. The mount is comprised of a rectangular bar with a D-shaped cross section, measuring to 40.1mm long and 2.8mm thick. Both ends terminate in an elongated knop expanding from a D-shaped lobe; these are perforated, with a separate copper alloy rivet retained in one. Both lobes are preceded by a raised chevron collar, pointing towards the terminal. Length: 51.9mm; Width: 7.9mm; Thickness: 2.8mm; Weight: 5.57g. Egan (1998: 73, no. 147) presents a caskets mount similar in form, dating to AD

A Medieval copper alloy zoomorphic hooked mount, probably dating to c. AD 1100-1300. The central element of the mount is a small, broadly flat, sub-rectangular plate, 9.1mm wide at the mid-point, and c. 6.7mm long. Expanding from the top corners of the mount at roughly 45 degree angles are a pair of integral arms, both terminating in an irregular sub-oval with a drilled circular perforation. The arms themselves are simple flat bars, though both are crudely cast and lean in an anti-clockwise direction. The more upright right arm is 17.9mm long, 3.3mm wide at the mid-point of the bar an…
