A small cylindrical object, cast from copper alloy, which is probably the end cap (pommel) from a sixteenth century knife. The object measures 12.55mm in diameter and 11.81mm in length. It weighs 9.14g. Iron corrosion from the knife blade fills a narrow and shallow slot through the centre of one end. In the centre of the other end there is a circular concave depression, 4.5mm in diameter. Lines of stamped annulets are faintly visible around this depression and on the side of the cylinder. There are also two parallel lines which run around both the top and bottom of the side. The upper …

The cast copper alloy end cap from a small sixteenth century knife, measuring 13.8mm by 13.56mm by 4.74mm and weighing 3.02g. The end cap is loosely trapezoidal, with a wider distal end which consists of three perforated lobes. Beneath these lobes a small lip protrudes from each side and below this point there is a longitudinal slot which contains the remains of an iron tang. There are traces of gilding on one side of the end cap. A similar knife end cap has been found at Covehithe in Suffolk (SF-5F44B4).

A cast copper alloy tanged knife of late Bronze Age date. The knife measures 141.15mm in length, 21.87mm in maximum width and 3.9mm in maximum depth. It weighs 49.87g. It has a rounded tip and widens only slightly along the length of the blade. It then narrows to the damaged tang, which is 16.18mm wide at this point and narrows to 14.22mm. The length of the tang is about 22.5mm. The object's mid olive green patina is patchy and much of the surface has flaked off. Similar knives have been found at Maesbury Camp, near Wells in Somerset and at Bilbury Rings in Wiltshire. The Maesbury Camp…

A lead alloy end stop from a late medieval knife. The end stop is hollow and cylindrical with an oval cross section. It has been made from pieces of sheet lead alloy which have been soldered together. It measures 26.34mm in length and the cross section is 13.5mm by 10.79mm at the slightly flared distal end. It weighs 4.73g. The surfaces of the end cap are worn, but there are hints of gilding and the faint outlines of two standing figures on the curving side. These may be saints. There is another faint motif on the flat distal end. A very similar knife end cap from the City of London i…

A small Roman cast copper-alloy terminal in the form of an eagle's head, possibly from a knife or razor. The partially hollow terminal has a cylindrical socket. The poorly-executed bird holds a small spherical object, probably representing a cake or pellet of food, in its beak. Between the beak and the eye there is a deeply grroved, slightly curving line on either side. The eyes, unusually, are indicated by incised vertical, pointed ovals. Behind the eyes on each side is a vertical, pointed oval ridge, incised with six short diagonal grooves. The back of the head is decorated with five…

The end stop from a late medieval or early post-medieval knife, measuring 22.12mm by 17.9mm by 8mm and weighing 12.04g. The object is T-shaped, with a rounded proximal end. This has a tapering scalloped edge. At the other end is a slot, 7mm by 2mm, in which are the remains of the knife's iron tang. A small part of the tang protrudes from the end of the slot. The object is quite worn, but some simple decoration can be seen. Part of a triangular perforated knife or hog-backed knife, of late Bronze Age date. The rather obtuse cutting edges are typical of these objects (pers. comm. Stuart Needham). The object would have originally been the shape of a squat isosceles triangle, with the cutting edge on the long side. In the centre there would have been an oval or rounded triangular perforation. The surviving fragment represents less than a third of the original artefact. In its present state it measures 31.31mm in length and weighs 15.99g. The maximum thickness is 6.47mm. The object has a heavy dark green pati…

Post Medieval cast copper-alloy terminal (stop) for a scale-tang knife handle. The stop is in the form of a pair of bifurcating horses hooves with deep incised lines between the pair and seperating the 'hooves' from the 'shoes' which are indicated by an incised central line for the frog, raised calkins at the ends and four punched indents for nail holes on each 'shoe'. The attachment end of the stop is oval and has a slot through it which contains the remains of the iron knife tang, the longer sides have wide incised lines running parallel to the edge between the slots. A medieval or post medieval knife stop dating to the period c. AD 1450 - 1650. The knife stop is trapeziodal in plan and triangular in profile. It splits to house the corroded remains of the iron tang. The tang projects from the stop and tyerminates in an old break. The stop exhibits a series of incised horizontal grooves on both sides. The knife stop measures 15.99mm in length, 18.67mm maximum width, 15.99 minimum width, 7.77mm maximum thickness, 4.52mm minimum thickness and weighs 7.82g. Cf. Read, B, 2001, p. 88, no. 645.

Part of a complete copper alloy knife handle and the iron knife tang of post-medieval date, circa AD 1756 - 1763.The handle is comprised of two sub-rectangular strips of metal each broken at one end, one currently longer than the other. The missing end would have been the terminal of the handle, the remaining end would have been where the handle met the blade. At this end the plates are riveted together with a circular copper alloy rivet. Part of the iron knife blade and flat tang is retained by the rivet. This is presumably the remains of the knife blade. The plates are decorated alo…

A corroded iron tang knife. The knife has a short blade ( 25 mm ) and longer, narrower tang (35mm) with parallel sides and flat surfaces. Whittle-tang knives were used over a long period of time, from Early-Medieval to the post-Medieval periods. This example is probably from the Early-Medieval period. For parallels on the PAS database, see HAMP- 5F3322 and LEIC-5E2151.

A copper-alloy and iron object which is probably part of an early post-Medieval knife. The object consists of a iron core with copper-alloy sheet metal covering. This copper-alloy portion has a lattice type linear decoration and raised edges with what may be a silver wire inlay. The terminal end slopes to a wedge shape with one section missing due to the iron expanding .The general shape is sub-rectangular in plan. The object has a brown patina and much iron staining. Damaged remains of a flint tool, probably a knife of Neolithic to Bronze age date. The piece is leaf shaped but much larger than an arrowhead. The outline appears mainly complete but breaks on both faces mean the extent of original retouch and exact form of the edges is unclear. A small amount of cortext (c.10% of the face) remains near the point on one face which may indicate it is unfinished and broke during production. The piece appears to have been formed on a large flake with pistal end now formed into the point. Some of the bulb of percussion may remain at the proximal end b…

A complete Post Medieval copper-alloy anthropomorphic knife terminal. A knife stop or end-cap from a scale-tang knife. The figurative three dimensional end-cap is an anthropomorphic head on an oval cross-section plinth. The head is wearing a large pointed hood, suggestive of a cowl or hooded cloak worn by monks.  The long, thin face with pointed chin is looking up at an angle of approximately 45 degrees and has crudely engraved facial features. A long vertical ridge forms a nose, separating the two round recesses for eyes, one of which is higher than…
