An incomplete Roman copper alloy openwork key handle, probably dating to AD 100-410. The surviving fragment comprises of the base of the moulded bow of the key handle, originally in the form of an openwork fleur-de-lys expanding from a collar. The apex of each lobe has been lost. The corroded vestigial remains of an iron shank survive below the collar. The bow is rectangular in cross section. An incomplete cast copper alloy rotary key dating to c.50 AD - c.200 AD The terminal of the key is trilobate, now missing its probable fleur de lis terminal. The stem continues from the terminal into a bulbous area defined by a collar continuing along the stem to where is narrows to accomodate the bit. The stem is hollow and sub-circular in cross section. An incomplete iron rotary key. The bow was heart-shaped, but one lobe is missing. The remaining lobe has a sub-circular aperture. The bow is flattened and and flared from the stem. The stem has a sub-angular cross section and expands slightly towards the broken tip. The rectangular bit is set at right angles to the bow and is in the shape of a forward facing angular S with two narrow clefts, one from each edge. Date: Roman - c. A copper alloy Roman Guiraud type 5 key finger-ring (or ring-key) dating to the period c. AD 200 - 410. The hoop has seven external facets, the uppermost serving as the bezel of the S-shaped projecting bit. The key consists of a cylindrical hollow shank with the S-shaped bit extending from it at a right angle. The bit has a serrated edge divided into five rectangular teeth. The finger ring measures 20.27mm in diameter, has an internal diameter of 16.78mm, is 2.37mm thick and weighs 5.13g. The projecting key measures 15.89mm in length, is 18.34mm wide and 4.14mm thick. An incomplete key. The copper alloy bow and partial stem of a two part key. The missing stem and bit was of iron and only a small area of corrosion product remains. THe Bow is oval with a stepped knop at the end, opposite the stem.. The bow has a pointed, faceted cross section.. The remaining stem is slightly expanded from the bow. A cast copper rotary key. The terminal of the key is trilobate with a circular aperture at the end on each lobe. There is also a small, rounded knop on the outer edge of each lobe. One lobe is broken. Running from between the lobes are low ridges (four in total). Below these are seven transverse ridges running across the tapering end of the key handle/terminal. A Roman Copper alloy key with fleur de lys style openwork handle and corroded iron bit. The copper alloy handle, in excellent condition, has a light grey sheen and may be leaded bronze. The fleur de lys openwork handle has a larger central lobe, 35.49mm high, topped by an integral globular knop with an incised groove around its circumference. All three lobes have internal flourishes or leaves, and a a pair of external leaves are located at the base of the design. Probable copper-alloy handle of Roman date, possibly a key handle in an elaborate turned baluster style. The top is a flat circular disc with a flat-topped projection in the centre. The shaft of the handle tapers below, then flares out to a more oval sectioned knop with a slight ridge above and below. Below this is a short constriction before the shaft widens slightly again.
