2017 T1182
Description: Gold bar of roughly oval section, irregularly shaped, tapering slightly from one end to the other. Roughly cast. Pitted from casting, but with no signs of any secondary treatment
Dimensions: 59 x 9 (6.5) x 5.5mm Weight 24.8g
Discussion: Although the form of the ingot is not diagnostic for the Viking Age, it is consistent with a number of known examples. The weight is also consistent with a Viking ounce of c. 25g. There are none of the the characteristic test marks found on Viking bullion, but this need not be significant, as they are not found on all ingots f…

Fragment of gold ingot. A segment of a bar or strip of gold. The piece is angular and tapers in one direction in terms of thickness (from 3.81 mm to 1.51 mm) and tapers in the opposite direction in its width (8.18 mm to 6.55 mm). The break at the thinner, wider end appears to be the result of a cut. The surface all have slight ripples and marks.
Date: Uncertain
Dimensions: 8.54 mm x 8.18 mm x 3.81 mm
Weight: 1.80 g
Neil Wilkin of the British Museum has defined this as undiagnostic in terms of date.

A Post Medieval copper alloy possible ingot fragment. The material is dark grey- black in colour, giving the appearance at first that the material may be flint and that the item may be a gunflint. However, green corrosion (oxidisation) can be seen on some parts of the surface and the sides are rounded, giving the apperanace of having been cast rather than knapped. The object was originally trapezoidal in shape; part of the item has snapped and broken away. Length: 15mm; With 17mm; Thckness: 6mm.

A small fragment from a possible gold ingot, this object is difficult to date with any certainty without more precise information from the context from which it came, if any. It is probably of prehistoric date and was found in an area well known for both its Neolithic and Early Bronze Age monuments and a series of Iron Age settlements.
As such, this item is more than likely a prehistoric object, older than 300 years, and is therefore probably Treasure.
