CURATOR'S REPORT A silver hooked tag with double hook, dating to the 9th century. Description of find A late Saxon hooked tag with trapezoid headplate, scalloped upper edge, three rivet holes and two hooks and very solidly made. The front is decorated with a vase containing a flower. Some of the curving leaves and flower stems of the plant are decorated with fine dots and incisions. An incomplete copper-alloy hooked tag of early-post-Medieval date. The plate is sub-rectangular and undecorated. At the top, a ridge separates the plate from the remains of the hanger. A damaged rearward hook projects downwards from the base of the plate. The object has a brown patina with patches of verdigris. Dimensions are: Length 33 mm. Width 17 mm. Thickness 2 mm. Weight 4.121 grams.

Description: A silver gilt dress fastener. A hook piece with filigree decorated plate. The plate is cinquefoil with scalloped edges around the foils. On each foil is a dome decorated with two applied filigree wire circles and all are glided. At the centre between the domes is a single domed rivet of gilded silver. Around the rivet is a separately applied silver rove which is not gilded and is tarnished to a dark grey colour. A cast copper alloy hooked clasp dress fastener or dress hook. The head only remains. A trefoil of three domed bosses with a separately applied pin at the centre. The lower dome is hollow and the upper two are filled with lead solder from the attachment of the rectangular sectioned angular loop. This example is similar to Brian Read's Class D, Type 6 hooked clasps recorded in Hooked Clasps and Eyes, 2008, page 78, number 260. A copper alloy hooked tag. An isoceles triangle shaped plate with and integral D-sectioned hook at the apex of the triangle (the base of the tag). At the top of the tag, at the opposite edge to the hook, are two circular attachment holes, one of which is open, the other filled with corrosion product. The surfaces of the tag are very corroded and pitted, but it appears to have been undecorated. The hook is tapering with a sharp end. It has been curled over. The upper part of the plate is bent. Post Medieval cast coper alloy Lozenge shaped, one piece, flat, Hooked Tag. Incomplete, hook broken; unfettled; moulded-in-relief eight-petaled flower; three attachment and four ornamental knops. Length 44.04mm. Width 18.70mm. Thickness 1.54mm. Weight 4.46g. 17th-century dress fasteners, made in a variety of shapes, were used in pairs, one hooked and one with an eye. A pair of good parallels will appear in Read's forthcoming book.

A cast copper alloy hooked tag of early sixteenth century date. The hooked tag measures 37mm by 13mm and has an oval plate with a trapezoidal hook at one end and a sharp backward curving hook at the other. The convex front is moulded with a Renaissance-style female bust, facing left. A very similar dress hook from Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, is recorded on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database (SOMDOR-EF8898) and features in the PAS Annual Report for 2006 (pp. 99-100).

Copper alloy dress hook.Cast in one piece.Trepezoidal framed loop. Sub-circular plate with openwork border around an undecorated central, circular recess with a rope pattern border. Two of the lower openwork holes (flanking the hook) may have been used as attachment/sewing holes. The oval sectioned hook projects opposite the loop. There are two transverse moulded ribs at the top before it tapers to a backward curving point. The back is undecorated.

The hooked tag consists of a triangular plate with two circular attachment holes at the attachment end. The plate tapers to a reverse facing hook whcih terminates in an old break. The plate is undecorated. The hooked tag measures 31.55mm in length, 20.02mm maximum width, 1.58mm minimum width, is 0.88mm thick and weighs 2.21g. Cf. Read, B, 2008, p. 7.
