Copper alloy horse harness pendant suspension mount. Sub-oval domed suspension plate with large side lobes for attachment. Two top lobes remain but traces of two smaller ones at the sides of the lower part are still visible. At the base is a notch housing a hinge point. The hinged bar is secured in place by folding over of the strips of metal each side of the notch. From this is suspended the remnant of the pendant (top loop only). The mount is decorated around its edge with seven clusters of stamped rings.

Gilded copper-alloy mount and/or pendant, perhaps from horse-harness. The object is axe-shaped, with Style II zoomorphic triple-strand interlace decoration and gilding on the front. The axe form has a narrow, slightly tapered top end with an attachment loop; the bottom edge is broad and convex, and the sides are incurved. The triple-strand decoration is highly stylised, and comprises several elements; it is difficult to trace clearly. There are two closed oval loops, one in each of the corners of the curved bottom edge. The rest comprises several elements, probably representing one …

Copper alloy horse harness pendant with pseudo-heraldic decoration. Quatrefoil with points between the foils. In the centre is a square of red enamel with raised decoration of an heraldic lion. Around this at each side of the square is a raised fleur de lys. It is likely that there was also enamel in the resulting recesses around the fleur de lys. There is a raised framing band around the edge of the pendant. At the top of the pendant is an offset suspension loop with the remains of the axis/attachment bar in the circular hole. The back is slightly concave and undecorated. Brian Read r…

A gilded cast copper alloy horse harness pendant of medieval date. The harness pendant is a simple circular shape, with a slightly concave back. The integral attachment lug (13.15mm in length) is set at 90 degrees to the rest of the pendant, and has a 3.5mm hole at its upper end. The loop itself is slightly bent. The decoration on the front of the pendant was formerly gilded, and some of this gilding survives. The motif consists of a large recercelee cross with a small leaf shape in between each arm. Examples of similar shape in Read's 'History Beneath our Feet' are dated to the 13th o…

A small cast copper alloy object identified by Geoff Egan as a pendant component from a medieval horse harness pendant. The object is 20.28mm in length, 17.82mm wide and 7.55mm thick. It weighs 5.08g. At the proximal end there is a circular loop which is set at 90 degrees to the rest of the object. Below this is tear drop shaped shaft, also set at 90 degrees. From the base of this two spheres project, one to each side. Both are decorated with a moulded outwards-facing X shape. The object would have been suspended from a harness mount, possibly with other pendants.

A probable medieval horse harness pendant component, cast in copper alloy with enamel decoration. The object is globular, 9.66mm in diameter at its widest point and narrows gradually. It superficially resembles an Anglo-Saxon pinhead, however at the thin end there are the worn remains of a suspension loop. The object is decorated with 13 small concave depressions, which are fairly regularly spaced in three lines (the upper of 5, the central line of 5 and the line closest to the loop of 3). Most of the depressions contain enamel, which has degraded to a creamy colour. The harness pendan…

Medieval copper alloy openwork (probable) harness pendant in the form of an eagle, missing its loop. The eagle has its head left (as you look at it) and tall wings, that stretch from just below the head to just above the feet (the legs with three-clawed feet being either side of the tail, bifurcated at its end, all three of which extend to the bottom of the pendant). It is openwork between head and neck and wings, tail and legs. The pendant is rather worn but the wings have longitudinal ribs and perhaps a tiny trace of gilding survives (on the wings). It is flat on the reverse and m…

Cast copper alloy harness pendant. A rectangular pendant with a large central hole. Decorated with an incised line and gilding on the front. the back is undecorated. An the middle of the top edge projects a suspension loop. this is probably part of an elaborate set of harness decorations, perhaps hanging from a decorative suspension mount and possible having another element attached at the central hole on the plate. Examples of such arrangements are illustrated and described in Ashley, S, 2002, "Medieval Armorial Horse Furniture in Norfolk" East Anglian Archaeology, report No. 101, p8…

A cast copper alloy horse harness pendant with enamel decoration. A shield-shaped pendant. A cast copper alloy sexfoil pendant. Six lobes radiating from a central circular plate. The lobes are slightly irregular but generally rounded. The top lobe extends into the suspension loop. Opposite it, on the lower edge of the pendant, the lobe is pierced with an off-centre circular hole. It is possible that this was used to suspend another decorative pendant. The centre of the pendant is decorated with a six petaled flower (possibly a rose) with a raised boss at the centre. This may have been enameled (there are traces of what may be blue enamel around the edge of the central boss). …
