Copper alloy double-sided strap union,. The oval central plate element has a frame of two raised crescents forming a central circular recess. On one side in the recess are two large raised ring and dot/ roundel decorations flanking two smaller ring and dots with a continuous frame forming an hourglass shape. At the centre of each of the roundels on the first side is a slight projection. This design is mirrored on the other side, although it is obscured by heavy corrosion. Instead of the domed roundels, on the second side these elements are flatter and each have a central spike that wou…

A fragment from a medieval copper alloy casket mount or harness pendant dating from the 12th to 13th centuries AD. The object is hexafoil in shape with an open circle in the centre. It has broken at a point at which two thin projections extend from the main body of the object. These projections may be part of an attachment loop or a further open work section of the object. Not enough of the object survives for a secure identification. It was clearly ornate however, as evidenced by the presence of gilding, which survives in the grooves between the petals. The object measures approximate…

A corroded and incomplete late early-medieval cast copper-alloy harness link (11th century AD). The object consists of a central plate, semicircular in cross-section, with a flat reverse. Central on this is a moulded boss extending either side of the plate. The boss is 14.85m in length. It represents a face, although whether it was intended to be anthropomorphic or zoomorphic is difficult to tell due to the wear and corrosion suffered by the artefact. Just protruding above the plate are a pair of pointed ears. Below the plate is the nose and the V-shaped mouth. The nose is moulded, as…

A medieval copper-alloy harness decoration in the form of an eagle displayed. The bird, which faces forwards, has well moulded feathers. There is a circular-sectioned rivet located within a hole on the underside of the hollow bird, which would have attached the piece to a harness strap or, possibly, to a rotating pendant holder. For a parallel, see PAS record NMS-81E04E. It measures 40.70 mm in length, 37.03 mm in width and is 29.79 mm high. It has a weight of 25 grams.

An incomplete early medieval copper alloy horse harness fitting or bit link dating to c. AD 1000 - 1100. The bit link is D-shaped in cross-section and consists of a central bar section which terminates in an old break at one end. At the other end is a D-shaped loop with bevelled inner edges.
