A flint core. A single platform bladelet core of irregular shape, but tending towards conical. Made from a piece of dark grey pebble flint with a glossy, mottled blue-white patina. There is some abraded iron-stained cortex remaining. The rest of the "conical" surface is covered in multiple converging bladelet removal scars. The flakes have been removed from a single platform. The edges of the core show signs of deliberate platform edge abrasion.

A group of flint cores, probably of Mesolithic or Neolithic date, c. 11,000- 2,600 BC, part of a larger assemblage of flint, see also: WILT-19B371; WILT-196E52; WILT-1940B2; WILT-19212E; WILT-185746; WILT-17D77C; WILT-19C816.
The group comprises of 5 cores all of dark blue-grey flint with paler inclusions, although the surface of one has become patinated and is now white, with visible iron staining on the ridges between removal facets. All of the cores have surviving cortex covering a portion of their surface, and many also appear to have been subjected to modern damage. In gener…

A Mesolithic flint core, used for the production of blades and flakes dating to the period c.10,000-4000 BC. It is broadly conical in form. It has a single striking platform as flakes have been removed in the same direction, predominantly from one side. It exhibits five parallel negative flake scars from blade and flake removal. The core retains an area of cortex comprising c.

A flint core. A single platform bladelet core of irregular shape, but tending towards conical. Made from a piece of mid grey mottled nodule flint with a low gloss patina. There is some thick, off-white cortex remaining at the pointed base. The odd shape is probably due to the presence at one side of an irregular void which prevented this side from being worked further. The rest of the "conical" surface is covered in multiple converging bladelet removal scars. The flakes have been removed from a single platform. The edges of the core are damaged, possibly from re-use as a scraper. Ther…

A bipolar core with two striking platforms at opposing ends, made on a crudely flaked flint nodule fragment. The flint is opaque and originally light grey, however most of the object is now covered in a smooth, thin mid-gloss patina with areas of heavy reddish brown ferrous staining, mainly on the flake scar ridges. Two small areas of nodular cortex remain. Broad flake scars and more linear blade flakes scars are visible around all sides, many showing hinge fractures.

A flint keeled core, made on a broken polished axe. An elongate oval shaped core with platforms at acute angles to one another creating a keeled edge and an upper and lower face. Both faces show broad flake removal scars, many terminate in hinge fractures indicating probable use of a hard hammer. The flint is opaque and mottled dark to light grey with plentiful areas of reddish brown ferrous staining, mainly to flake scar ridges. Ridges and edges are smoothed. There are remnants of polished surface on one face. There is also an area of use waer (battering) along the edge at one end.

A flint core produced during the process of blade manufacture. The core is conical in shape and has two platforms; there is a primary platform with working around almost all of its circumference and some minimal opposed end flaking from a secondary platform at the tip. The flint is opaque, mid to light grey with a high-gloss patina. A small area of cortex remains covering no more than 5% of the surface. Multiple linear blade removal scars are visible around all sides. There is no significant evidence for platform dressing or abrasion.

A bifacially worked fractured flint nodule fragment, probably a re-utilized core. The object is elongate but irregularly shaped and has a thick plano-convex cross section, made thinner at one end by a short, deep flake removal with pronounced bulb and hinge scars. Flaking on the convex surface is shallow and irregular, and there is a small patch of abraded chalky cortex near the thicker end. The opposed face retains a small area of naturally fractured surface but has been extensively modified with broad, flattish flaking, some with incipient and terminal hinges. There are two steep fl…

A core rejuvenation flake that has been re-utilized as scraper tool, made from a tertiary sub-triangular flake of Portland chert. The flake would have been removed from the original platform of the core in order to create a new platform. The chert is opaque and characteristically mid to dark grey in colour with a mid-gloss patina and is mostly covered in a thin speckled off-white re-cortification, except for areas of retouch carried out at a later date. The object has a triangular cross section with the dorsal face showing large broad flake removal scars with strong ripples. The dista…

A bifacially worked keeled core with platforms at acute angles to one another, or a worked flake made on a thick flake of Portland chert. The chert is opaque and mid-light grey in colour with a low-gloss patina and is covered in a thin off-white re-cortification, the object has a lenticular shape. Both faces show flaking across the central area with shorter, scaled semi-abrupt retouch around margins. Particularly note the 'thick' edge, which looks like it has been prepared as a platform for another flake removal.

A re-utilised flint core, re-used as a hammerstone. Originally a core comprising of at least six large to medium sized flakes taken from two platforms from a naturally fractured nodule fragment of flint with thick chalky cortex surviving at one end and part of one side. The core has been re-utilised as a hammerstone; evidence of this can be seen in an area of well developed characteristic impact chatter and abrasion running around almost half of the circumference. An area of cortex appears to been utilised for grip and is unaffected. The object has high-gloss surfaces where flint is e…
