An Iron Age 'Duro Boat' gold quarter stater dating from c. 80 - 50 BC. The following comments are from Ian Leins, British Museum: 'The stater was produced in Dorset, Hampshire, the Isle of Wight and surrounding counties in about 80 - 50 BC. It is published in the major catalogues of Iron Age coinage (details below). The front is an abstract design apparently based on a boat. The back is even more abstract, making it difficult to determine the original inspiration for the design, although it is often described as a 'thunderbolt'. A possible contemporary copy of an Iron Age bullet type quarter stater of the Durotriges dating to the period c. 60 - 30 BC. The stater exhibits a circumferential casting ridge and is gold plated with an exposed core of copper alloy and lead. It has not been struck on either side. It has been suggested that this is a contemporary copy of either a Dorchester Y-type or Ringwood Cross type. C.f. ABC 2145 & 2148.
