A Roman silver siliquae coin hoard, dating to the period AD 360-363. 4 coins are of the emperor Julian II and one is of Constantius II. Discussion Given the narrow date range of these coins, and the close proximity of their findspots, this group comprises a scattered hoard. The coins contain over 10% precious metal and are over 300 years old. Consequently, in terms of both age and precious metal content, they qualify as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996. No. Emperor Reverse …

Description: Post-medieval find of 6 gold and 959 silver coins, range 1550-c.1642 Total face value of group at time of deposit: £43 17s.6d. Discussion The 1029 coins from Powerstock are all of good gold (22 carats fine) or of sterling silver (over 90% fine metal).  They are all English, without the Irish and Scottish element which is often a feature of large Civil War hoards, perhaps suggesting an unusual level of selection. The earliest coins are from Edward VI’s Third Period, 1550-3, along with two coins of Philip and Mary. Otherwise all coins are of Elizabeth I (…

The coins consist of 393 nummi (including fragments) dating from the period AD317 to AD 333. A number of the coins were incomplete and had the appearance of being cut deliberately rather than through damage; although mechanical damage through ploughing cannot be ruled out it is uncommon in hoards of nummi of this date. The pieces removed from the coins were angular and not circular as in the case of other examples of earlier coins used as a source of blanks for the creation of later forgeries (for example the group from Ancaster, PAS IARCH-E4F519). One of the coins appears to have bee…

2018 T8 I have examined a group of 22 coins reported found in Dorset. All of the coins are official silver issues of the English monarchs Elizabeth I, James I and Charles I and will therefore be of over 90% fine silver. A detailed catalogue accompanies this report. There are two denominations present: the halfcrown and shilling. The face value of the coins in the 17th century was £1 6s 6d, easily a month's pay for a labourer at the time and several week's wages for a soldier in the Civil War. The coins represent what we know about the currency of the mid-17th century,…

Discussion: The two coins were found in relatively close proximity to each other and on the balance of probability were probably associated at the time of deposition, but later disturbed by cultivation. The coins consist of 11 South Western British uninscribed silver staters commonly associated with the Durotriges, a people thought to have inhabited an area covering the modern county of Dorset, parts of Somerset, Wiltshire and Hampshire and the Isle of Wight during the late Iron Age. The silver coins appear to be all of the type ABC 2169 / VA 1235-1 / BMC 2555ff produced from about 60/50 BC to the late first century BC. A group of four silver coins. All are examples of the late medieval English silver penny and will be of the sterling standard, 92.5% fine metal. The two older coins are worn and possibly clipped, which makes it likely that they were in circulation alongside the two later coins, both from the last decade or so of Henry VI's reign (1422-60), a period when the official weight of the penny was 15 grains (0.9g). That the later coins are all from the York mint is typical of the fifteenth century. The group was probably deposited roughly in the period c. 1455 to 1470, when a new weight stand…

Date of discovery: November 2013 and October 2014 Circumstances of discovery: The coins were found separated by a distance of 3 meters, at a depth of 6 inches below the surface of a previously ploughed field. Early and later medieval pottery has been found in the same general area. The identical typology and condition of the coins suggests that they were lost or deposited together at the same time, and the action of ploughing may have contributed to their apparent separation in the ground. Description: The finds consist of two silver coins, both dating from the second half of t…

The group consists of two silver Roman Republican coins of a denomination known as denarii and one denarius of Tiberius, four silver Iron Age staters and eight copper alloy sestertii and dupondii from the reign of Claudius I (AD 41-54). The Iron Age staters are uninscribed types usually associated with the Durotriges, a people thought to have inhabited an area covering the modern county of Dorset, parts of Somerset, Wiltshire and Hampshire and the Isle of Wight during the late Iron Age. They were produced in the mid to late first century BC (about 60 to 20 BC). In terms of date, the e…

Two separate ceramic vessels containing Roman coins were found on 14th October 2011 by an anonymous finder. The vessels were found in the same location whilst metal detecting on ploughed soil in a field at a depth of about 14 inches. The vessels were in fragmentary condition due to plough damage, with only the bases intact. An excavation of the area of the find was subsequently carried out by Terrain Archaeology. Additional material from this excavation consisted of 8 coins from the surface (and an iron nail) and 6 coins found after the removal of the pots; these could not be related t…

These are a group of 4 silver pennies of the Short Cross coinage, a type used for about 80 years though 4 reigns. Their details allow them to be dated more precisely, as set out below. As official English pennies they will have a silver standard of over 90% fine metal. They would have been in currency together in the years around 1210 and it is likely that they represent a single deposit. In the 13th century cut halfs and quarters of Short Cross pennies usually outnumber full pennies in areas of individual coin losses, and a collection of full pennies alone is more likely to represent…

A group of 12 coins reported found near Evershot, Dorset. All are of silver of the sterling standard, c. 92.5% fine metal, a standard followed in both Scotland and England at this time. The coins appear to represent the currency of England in the later 1350s and 1360s, when the issues of Edward III's Fourth Coinage had come to dominate over the older sterlings of Edward I and II, although these still represented a large proportion of the penny denomination in use. Most of the coins are the higher silver denominations of groat (fourpence) and half-groat (twopence). Scottish coins of Da…
