I have examined a group of 10 coins reported found at Winterborne St Martin. All are official silver coins of Queen Elizabeth I and will be of the sterling standard, 92.5% fine metal. The group consists of just two of the silver denominations then in currency, the sixpence and threepence, so clearly represents selected material. The latest clearly dated coin is from 1575, so it appears the group was deposited in the mid to late 1570s. Their details are as follows, listing them by denomination and date (the number at the end of each line is that on the original packet; the coin marke…

The coins were found on 07/02/2016 by the finder whilst metal detecting on cultivated land. The finder reports that the coins were scattered around a small area, indicating that the original deposit had been struck by the plough. No pottery, or other evidence of a container was found with the coins. A number of the coins were recovered fused together, or with evidence of heavy concretions consistent with having been deposited in close proximity to other coins in the past. The finder returned to the site subsequentl…

Date of discovery: November 2013 and October 2014
Circumstances of discovery: The coins were found separated by a distance of 3 meters, at a depth of 6 inches below the surface of a previously ploughed field. Early and later medieval pottery has been found in the same general area. The identical typology and condition of the coins suggests that they were lost or deposited together at the same time, and the action of ploughing may have contributed to their apparent separation in the ground.
