A probable hoard of silver Iron Age staters. There are seven staters of which two are complete and five are incomplete or fragmentary. Several are in two pieces. All are South Western British Iron Age uninscribed staters of a type commonly found in Dorset, Wiltshire and surrounding counties. This series of staters varies in design and composition from specimens containing a small amount of gold as well as silver (ABC 2157 type) to specimens of slightly lower weight with a higher proportion of copper to silver (ABC 2169) to struck (ABC 2175) and cast (ABC 2178 ff) examples in cop…

Extracted from file report by E. Ghey: The 40 coins are all gold Iron Age coins of the denomination known as a stater. All but one are of similar appearance and are very worn pale gold Continental Iron Age staters produced in Northern France (Normandy area) during the c. 2nd century BC. They are sometimes associated with the people later referred to as the Baiocasses and belong to the series “aux sangliers” (with boars, DT series 341) or “aux lyres” (with lyres, DT series 338) (BN 6955-6988 de Jersey 1994, 108-113 and fig. 57). There are 22 lyre series coins an…

Description: Post-medieval find of 6 gold and 959 silver coins, range 1550-c.1642 Total face value of group at time of deposit: £43 17s.6d. Discussion The 1029 coins from Powerstock are all of good gold (22 carats fine) or of sterling silver (over 90% fine metal).  They are all English, without the Irish and Scottish element which is often a feature of large Civil War hoards, perhaps suggesting an unusual level of selection. The earliest coins are from Edward VI’s Third Period, 1550-3, along with two coins of Philip and Mary. Otherwise all coins are of Elizabeth I (…

The coins consist of 393 nummi (including fragments) dating from the period AD317 to AD 333. A number of the coins were incomplete and had the appearance of being cut deliberately rather than through damage; although mechanical damage through ploughing cannot be ruled out it is uncommon in hoards of nummi of this date. The pieces removed from the coins were angular and not circular as in the case of other examples of earlier coins used as a source of blanks for the creation of later forgeries (for example the group from Ancaster, PAS IARCH-E4F519). One of the coins appears to have bee…

2018 T8 I have examined a group of 22 coins reported found in Dorset. All of the coins are official silver issues of the English monarchs Elizabeth I, James I and Charles I and will therefore be of over 90% fine silver. A detailed catalogue accompanies this report. There are two denominations present: the halfcrown and shilling. The face value of the coins in the 17th century was £1 6s 6d, easily a month's pay for a labourer at the time and several week's wages for a soldier in the Civil War. The coins represent what we know about the currency of the mid-17th century,…

Two Iron Age silver staters, both uninscribed issues of the South Western Durotriges type (ABC no. 2169, BMC 2532-2550. VA 1235), probably dating to 50-20 BC. Coin 1: Diameter 20.59mm; weight 3.08mm; die axis 8 o'clock. Coin 2: Diameter 20.33mm; weight 3.32mm; die axis 2 o'clock Date: Late Iron Age - 50-20 BC. Discussion: The two coins were found in relatively close proximity to each other and on the balance of probability were probably associated at the time of deposition, but later disturbed by cultivation. The coins therefore probably represent a dispersed hoard of t…

The coins consist of 11 South Western British uninscribed silver staters commonly associated with the Durotriges, a people thought to have inhabited an area covering the modern county of Dorset, parts of Somerset, Wiltshire and Hampshire and the Isle of Wight during the late Iron Age. The silver coins appear to be all of the type ABC 2169 / VA 1235-1 / BMC 2555ff produced from about 60/50 BC to the late first century BC. However in most cases the coin design is too indistinct to be certain that they do not belong to varieties of this type. The coins are fairly worn in appearance an…

Askerswell, Dorset Report for HM Coroner Circumstances of discovery Found by metal-detector users at a commercial rally on ploughed land in the parish of Askerswell, West Dorset, on 2nd September 2017. The find was brought to the attention of the Finds Liaison Officer Ciorstaidh Hayward Trevarthen, who with the assistance of professional archaeologist Mike Trevarthen excavated, lifted and recorded the hoard (see unpublished report by RMA Trevarthen Archaeological Services). The investigation found that the hoard had been truncated by the plough and dispersed. However the base…

A group of four silver coins. All are examples of the late medieval English silver penny and will be of the sterling standard, 92.5% fine metal. The two older coins are worn and possibly clipped, which makes it likely that they were in circulation alongside the two later coins, both from the last decade or so of Henry VI's reign (1422-60), a period when the official weight of the penny was 15 grains (0.9g). That the later coins are all from the York mint is typical of the fifteenth century. The group was probably deposited roughly in the period c. 1455 to 1470, when a new weight stand…

I have examined a group of 10 coins reported found at Winterborne St Martin. All are official silver coins of Queen Elizabeth I and will be of the sterling standard, 92.5% fine metal. The group consists of just two of the silver denominations then in currency, the sixpence and threepence, so clearly represents selected material. The latest clearly dated coin is from 1575, so it appears the group was deposited in the mid to late 1570s. Their details are as follows, listing them by denomination and date (the number at the end of each line is that on the original packet; the coin marke…
