A group of three clay tobacco pipes fragments dating to the 17th century. 1] A clay pipe bowl with a flat heel. A Bristol and Wiltshire type dating to c. 1640 to 1670. The incuse mark on the heel is GEO/RGE/BVT in three lines. George Butt was a maker in Shaftesbury. An incomplete clay tobacco pipe. The bowl only of a "Jonas" or "Walter Raleigh" type from the Netherlands. The bowl is decorated with a rearward facing human face with one annulet eye and one oval, eyebrows, large ears, a wide, drooping nose and upturned moustache. The rear of the bowl is decorated with short curving lines to indicate hair. Date: Post Medieval - c. 1630 - 1650 Dimensions: 32.11 mm x 20.03 mm x 5.36 mm Weight: 8.13 g

A fragment of clay tobacco pipe. Part of the bowl with a flat heel only remains. The bowl is angled outwards and slightly bellied. There are traces of a maker's mark on the flat, oval heel: EDW SAND ELL The maker is Edward Sandell. Pipes with this type of mark have been found in Wiltshire, for example in Maiden Bradley, recorded in the Warminster PArish Mageazing , October 1902 where is was suggested that the maker was based in Amesbury in the 17th century (http://www.pbenyon.plus.com/Warminster_Par_Mag/1902_10/06.html) Date:Post Medieval 1660 - 1670 Weight: 4.13 g
