A cast copper alloy handle lug probably from a chafing dish handle. The lug is thick and oval in shape with a collar at one end. Projecting from this end is stub of a circular rivet which would have attached the lug to the vessel wall. The lug has a large, slightly off-centre and sub-circular hole through which the handle would have attached. The hole shows signs of wear. Chafing dishes were vessels made of metal or earthenware for holding burning charcoal or other material on which food was cooked or kept warm at the table. A copper alloy lug from a chafing dish handle. Broadly oval in plan, the lug is broken at the attachment edn. It has a large circular, off-centre piercing through which the dhandl woud have been attached. All the surfaces have file marks on them. For a parallel see SUSS-DC2D20.
