Lead/tin alloy solid cast button with separate embedded drawn wire shank. A biconvex button with hammered faceting at the equator edge. The button is indented around the attachment point of the looped wire shank.
Similar in construction to types illustrated in B Read, 2005, Metal Buttons, p. 23 (Nos. 74 and 75). Read states that such buttons possibly date from the medieval period but that similar types are found in 17th century contexts (ibid) Therefore, this is cautiously dated as Post-medieval, 16th to 17th century.

Post medieval copper alloy button front with silvered or tinned surface. It is octagonal and domed with a flat, octagonal top and a hemispherical hollowed interior. The surface is coated in white metal and decorated with eight radiating incised lines running from the centre of the flat top and along the edges of the faces. Along side each of these are rows of horizontal lines, framed by another vertical line at the left side (these do not run to the centre of the top. The dome was probably soldered to a separate back with attachment shank (both missing)

A cast lead button of probable seventeenth century date. The slightly convex circular button measures 19.4mm in diameter by 5.3mm thick and weighs 3.7g. The front is decorated with a central circular moulded knop, surrounded by radiating slightly curved lines. In the centre of the reverse is the stub of the integral shank. The edge is damaged in places.

A cast copper alloy button. A circular button with an integral shank with a large circular aperture (the shank is broken. The front of the button is decorated with an incised outer band at the edge and a curved arm wheel design around a central ring a dot. Between the arms there are alternately hatched lines an small curved lines with dots.
Similar examples can be seen in Read, B, 2005, "Metal Buttons", page 66, in particular number 256.

Cast copper alloy single piece button. A flat, circular button with and integral cast loop. The loop has an off-centre drilled hole. The forn of the button is decorated with seven stamped circles arranged in a sexfoil flower design with six stamped chevrons around the outside between the petals. The six petals are decorated with hatched lines and the inner circle has an off-centre stamped dot. There is an incised framing band around the whole design. Post Medieval composite sheet copper-alloy button. The front and back are made of two pieces of copper alloy sheet soldered together, the separate copper alloy wire shank is missing. The front is convex with a central raised boss an an incised line around the edge. The back is now concave but parallels and the off centred form of the indent suggest it was originally convex and has been damaged. A cast copper alloy button. A shallow biconvex two piece button. The button is sub circular with a raised dot in the centre. The surface at the front is smooth and well finished. At the back, the surface is rougher and has an off centre wire loop attached. The loop is of circular sectioned copper alloy wire. The metal of the button is grey in colour, suggesting some tin content. Such buttons are often made of a form of copper alloy called tombac.

An 18th century cast copper alloy button with central iron boss. A radiating pattern of raised slightly curving rays, widening towards the edge, are separated by lines of punched identations. the reverse is concave with a central cone shank, distinctive of the 18th century, retaining the rusted remains of an iron loop for attachment.

A corroded but complete cast lead button of post-medieval date (Th. without loop: c. 9.1mm). The button is domed, with a flat back with central, integral iron loop of circular cross-section; no casting seam is visible. The upper surface bears patterning moulded in low relief, consisting of lines and circles around a central cross, but with obvious symmetry. Read (2005, 57ff.) dates such buttons to the 16th century.

A late medieval copper alloy button (late 15th-16th centuries). The button is discoidal and solid with a convex front and flat back. It is decorated with a central pellet and a clockwise 8-bladed impeller. It has a rectangular-section sub-lozenge shaped shank. The object has a diameter of 12.06mm and is 14.74mm long (shank length 10.34mm)and weighs 2.84g.
A good parallel for this button is recorded in Read (2005, no. 112), although this example is approximately 1mm smaller in diameter than Read's.

A cast copper alloy button of probable late thirteenth to mid-fourteenth century AD date. The solid button is bi-convex and formerly had an integral looped shank, which has broken off. The surface has been tinned. Similar buttons are illustrated in Read's 'Metal Buttons c. 900 BC - C. AD 1700' (2005, pp. 22-3, nos. 63-72).

A cast copper alloy button of probable sixteenth century date. The solid circular button has a convex front and a flat back. The rounded integral shank contains an off-centre drilled hole. The front of the button is decorated with a moulded design consisting of a central pellet surrounded by eight curving spokes with rounded ends. A very similar button can be seen in Read's 'Metal Buttons' (2005, p. 33, no. 112). This example is 16th century in date and was found in north-west Dorset.
