Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Incomplete Langton Down strip brooch dating from the early Roman period, made of a strip of thin copper alloy sheet metal, folded into a tube at the top to hold the pin mechanism. Only one of the wings and the bow of the brooch survive with a tapering body with three broad parallel longitudinal grooves down the front face. The foot, catchplate, pin, spring mechanism and one of the wings are all missing. The brooch appears to have been coated in a black substance, perhaps burnt organic material having been part of a cremation burial, which has since rubbed off on the upstanding surface…

Cast copper alloy openwork disc brooch, circular and flat, with a plain edge. The brooch is decorated with four pointed-oval holes defining a cruciform shape, with a small punched ring-and-dot in the centre and on each expanded arm. The rectangular hinge and catchplate survive on the back of the brooch, but the pin is missing. Hattatt (2000) illustrates a flat disc brooch with a cruciform shape alternating with lentoid shapes around a central circle or hub, which he classifies as a Wheel brooch, on page 347, fig.206, no.1137, which is dated from the 2nd century AD. This brooch i…

Cast copper alloy Roman T-shaped hinged brooch with an enamelled stud on the bow. The stud consists of two circular cells, one within the other, with the central cell still retaining the darker remains of some red enamel and the outer cell retaining some fragments of brighter red enamel. The wings are damaged at each end, revealing the copper alloy spindle within, but the pin and hinge that wound around the spindle, in the aperture between the wings on the back of the brooch, are both missing. There are four incised triangles on the head, two on either side of a central band of chevr…

Fragment of a cast copper alloy Roman brooch with just the lower part of the bow, the foot and part of the catchplate remaining. The front of the bow is decorated with diamond-shaped recesses in a linear chain which still hold the remains of red and blue enamel. There is a rivet hole at the foot, before it terminates to a point, which would have held an everted pedestal to complete the foot. This style of decoration on this thin and delicate bow and the everted foot suggests that it is part of an enamelled headstud brooch which dates from the 2nd century AD. Hattatt (2000) illustra…

Incomplete cast copper alloy Roman hinged Developed T-shaped brooch with intact inlaid enamel dating from the period c.AD 70-160. The head loop, head, wings and upper bow survive while the lower bow, foot, catchplate and pin are missing. The head is composed by two incomplete tubular wings divided by a central hinge slot for the pin. Part of the iron axis bar survives in the wings and is visible in the hinge slot with iron oxide around it. The base of the head loop survives between the wings and in front of the hinge. The head is flat in front of the loop and then turns sharply into t…

Incomplete cast copper alloy Roman T-shaped brooch with the wings, hinge and part of the bow remaining but missing its pin, foot and catchplate. The wings are complete and extend 9 mm on either side of the head and terminate in decortation that consists of two parallel circumferential lines that contain punched dots and incised chevrons. The top of the head above the copper alloy hinge is corroded and it is possible that there was originally a head loop which is now missing. The head is decorated with two incised triangles that from a diamond-shaped design pointing towards the top of …

Incomplete cast copper alloy Roman disc brooch with a plain edge, oval in plan and flat in profile. The upper face of the brooch is decorated with a central six-pointed star or sexfoil, each point terminates in a circular lobe, within a blue enamelled field. The centre of the sexfoil has a raised circular boss which also has blue enamel inlaid around it. This shape within the disc, of a sexfoil with lobes, in a field of blue enamel also compares well to the Roman plate brooches with projecting knops, so it may have been emulating these more elaborate brooches. The reverse of the brooc…

Cast copper alloy Roman T-shaped brooch, with red enamel still intact in the circular settings on the bow of the brooch. The three settings are surrounded by raised and moulded diamond shaped frames, lined up in a vertical row, and defined by raised ridges either side of each point. The wings have two linear parallel incisions at each end. The hinge and pin (37 mm long) survive in their entirety, but the foot of the brooch and the catchplate are missing. Hattatt (2000) illustrates similar examples on page 303, Fig.162, Nos.908, 386 and 28, which are dated from the 1st to the 2nd cen…
