Object type: BORER
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A probable crude borer or awl. A large thick core chunk/ tertiary waste flake of mid grey-brown flint. There are some flaking scars on the dorsal face and the remains of a large hinge fracture ventrally. The flake is wide and one side, where a point had formed at the edge of the hinge fracture, has been retouched. This is probably to augment the point to make an awl or borer.

Probably Neolithic flint borer, measuring 38.9x17.1x5.5mm and weighing 2.97g.
The flint is dark in colour with c.40% patination, some light and some heavy in clustered spots.
Both right and left dorsal edges (with additional working on right and left ventral edges) have been worked, particularly towards the distal end, which is a point.
In profile the flint has a slight overhang at the distal end. It is triangular in shape, being widest at the proximal end.

A large elongate sub-triangular secondary flake of flint, narrowed to a point at the proximal end. The flint is opaque and mottled light to mid-grey. Much of the object is now covered in a thin mid-gloss patina, with areas of reddish brown ferrous staining which is especially heavy on flake scar ridges. An area of nodular cortex remains on the distal end of the dorsal face. The dorsal face shows broad flake removal scars on both left and right sides creating a central ridge. Both margins show possible re-working at the proximal end to form a crude point - possibly a heavy-duty piercer…

Object type: BORER
Broad period: NEOLITHIC

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete irregular flint borer or piercer. Made on a tertiary flake of mid grey mottled flint. It has a low gloss surface. At the proximal end is a small striking platform. On the ventral face is a small, diffuse bulb of percussion with a long bulbar scar. The dorsal face has pronounced closely spaced waves of percussion. There is short, abrupt, sub-parallel retouch (blunting) along both sides and the distal edge. The tip has been broken off.

A flint awl or borer. Made on a tertiary flake of translucent brown flint. The surface is glossy. On the ventral face is a low bulb of percussion and numerous closely spaced waves. On the dorsal faces are several elongate flakes. The proximal end and margins both have short, abrupt (blunting) retouch worked from opposing faces. The left margin has been shaped to produce a long beak, the distal tip of which is broken.

A large flint borer or piercer. Made on a cortical flake of patchy grey and off-white flint. The surface is glossy and slightly yellowed. The proximal end has a large striking platform. On the ventral face is diffuse bulb of percussion and numerous closely spaced waves of percussion. On the dorsal faces are several elongate flake removals and a large area of worn nodule cortex. The beak has been formed by abrupt retouch along one margin and by utilising the natural curve of the original nodule on the other.

A secondary flint flake which has been notched and retouched to make a composite tool. An elongate flake of mid grey flint with a thin and patchy milky-white patina. At the proximal end is a wide striking platform and a well defined bulb of percussion. There are widely spaced, shallow waves of percussion along the ventral face. On the dorsal face, at the distal end, is a band of thick nodule cortex. There are several flake removals along the length of the dorsal face and some have more marked waves of percussion compared to the ventral face. Viewed from the dorsal face, the left side…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A borer or piercer made on a large secondary flake of flint. Pointed tools used to make holes, this piece is sub-triangular in shape with a triangular cross-section and tapers to a long thin point. The flint is opaque, mid to dark mottled grey with a low-gloss patina. Cortex remains on 70% of the dorsal face, maybe left in place as a non-slip grip, and shows through to the proximal end and left margin of the ventral face. The pointed tip has been formed by scaled, semi-abrupt retouch to side margins and the central ridge of the dorsal face. The ventral face is relitively smooth and un…

A possible borer or piercer made on a large, secondary flake of flint. Pointed tools used to make holes, this object is sub-oval and crude in shape with a trapezoidal cross section, tapering to a long, thin off-centre point. The flint is opaque, mid to dark grey with a low-gloss patina; almost all surfaces are now covered in a smooth off-white recortification with areas of reddish brown ferrous staining, mainly to flake scar ridges. Thick and smooth nodular cortex remains on the right side margin of one face and shows through to the left margin of the opposing face. The pointed tip ha…
