An undatable incomplete copper-alloy clapper bell, missing its iron clapper (corrosion remains inside the apex). It stands 30.45mm and the open end measures 28.91x26.41mm. It weighs 13.6g. The bell has a rounded rectangular cross-section, narrowing to the flattened apex (21.25x19.18mm) where the integral loop projects. It has a 28.45mm diameter piercing. The metal is either a tinned or high-tin copper alloy. No exact parallel could be found, but it has features in common with SF-0B3D62 for which a Late Early-Medieval to Medieval in date has been suggested. However in terms of its …

A copper alloy Roman bell dating to the period c. AD 43 - 410. The bell is conical in shape with a lozengiform suspension loop projecting from the top. The interior of the bell features traces of iron staining indicating the missing clapper. Crummy (1983, p. 127) states that bells were probably attached to the collars of livestock or domestic pets, although some may have been used as personal ornaments. The bell measures 27.16mm in height, has a maximum width of 23.93mm, a minimum width of 2.26mm and is 1.25mm thick. It weighs 9.91g. Cf. Crummy, N, 1983, p. 127, fig. 143, no. 4168.

A fragmented crotal bell with the foundry initials of W K . The lower section of the bell is missing, as is the iron pea and suspension loop. The remaining top half has split in two. Decoration consists of a sunburst pattern, in negative relief, at the centre of which are the letters 'W K' within a double circular groove border. A small portion of the lower section, which is still attached, suggests there was no decoration to the underside of the bell A William Knight was in production during 1567-1586 but this bell appears to be the product of the later W K and probably 17th-1…

A post-medieval copper-alloy rumbler or crotal bell with the lower half missing. The bell originally had a spherical chamber. The surviving upper half has a square suspension loop and two sound holes of c.7 mm in diameter. The bell has broken just below the casting ridge. The missing lower section would normally consist of two further sound holes joined by a rectangular slit. Internally, most of these bells have a unattached iron pea to create the sound. There is no evidence of decoration or maker's mark, although most examples have this to the lower section. The bell has a dark g

A cast copper-alloy post-medieval animal 'crotal' (bell). This complete example has a sub-square suspension loop between two circular sound holes located on the upper hemisphere. The sound holes are recessed on the outer surface and measure c. 5/6mm in diameter. The upper hemisphere is plain. The suspension loop has a angled top with a groove suggesting crude cutting. The perforation is also quite crude. The loop measures up to 10mm in height by 11.9mm in width by 5.15mm thick. There is a worn and slightly battered(?) median ridge separating the upper and lower hemispheres. The narrow…

An incomplete post medieval copper alloy spherical crotal or rumbler bell, dating to c. AD 1600-1800. Approximately 50% of the lower hemisphere of the bell is now missing, sheared off from just beneath the sound holes, one of which would have been circular while the other appears lozenge shaped. There is a distinctly thickened rib at the equator of the bell, dividing the two hemispheres. In the upper hemisphere are two opposing sound holes, which are larger than those in the lower hemisphere and both circular in shape. The suspension loop is square in shape with an irregularly ci…
