An incomplete Post Medieval copper alloy crotal bell, dating to c. AD 1500-1700. Part of the top of the suspension loop is missing due to an old break, with only the two lugs and part of the crossbar remaining. The upper and lower hemisphere of the bell is divided by a prominent rib. At either side of the suspension loop (about half way down the side of the upper hemisphere) is a sound hole which is 5mm in diameter, although one is smaller due to corrosion products obscuring the aperture. Two sound holes in the lower hemisphere are integral with the sound "slit". The upp…

A Post Medieval copper alloy cast crotal bell dating c. 1500 - 1700. Spherical in shape with two hemispheres seperated by a circumferential rib. The top hemisphere has a sub-rectangular suspension loop with a drilled round hole suggesting a possible 16th - 17th century date. There are two sound holes in the top hemisphere of noticeable different size, one 5.11mm and the other 8.39mm diameter. There are two sound holes connected by a sound slot in the bottom hemisphere. The pea is intact and the bell still rings. The suface is coated but worn and corroded with some suggestion …

Copper alloy pendant bell. Sheet metal bell with integral cast long necked suspension loop. The neck of the loop is flat and the head expanded. The loop has a circular aperture. The opposite end terminates in a globular bell formed by folding in four triangular tabs of sheet metal. This leaves a narrow saltire cross shaped aperture at the base. The tabs have also been notched at the top so that they form oval apertures. Inside the bell is a possible copper alloy sub-spherical "pea" which moves to make the bell sound. Reference: Read, B, 2001, "Metal Artefacts of Antiquity", pages 50…

A complete copper-alloy bell of Late Medieval to Early Post-Medieval date. It is spherical in shape and composed of two hemispherical halves that would have been soldered together. At the top is an integrally circular suspension loop, possibly formed from bent wire. There is possible recessed decoration surrounding the piece but this is obscured by corrosion. At the base is a small circular sound hole.

An incomplete post medieval copper alloy spherical crotal or rumbler bell, dating to c. AD 1600-1800. Approximately 50% of the lower hemisphere of the bell is now missing, sheared off from just beneath the sound holes, one of which would have been circular while the other appears lozenge shaped. There is a distinctly thickened rib at the equator of the bell, dividing the two hemispheres. In the upper hemisphere are two opposing sound holes, which are larger than those in the lower hemisphere and both circular in shape. The suspension loop is square in shape with an irregularly ci…

A copper alloy cast spherical bell. A type of bell often known as a "crotal" bell. A complete example retaining its copper alloy pea. The bell is spherical with a raised girth band separating the two hemispheres. The lower hemisphere has a thin, rectangular slot which is expanded into circular terminals on the underside. There are two circular sound holes in the upper hemisphere (either side of the attachment point of the loop).  At the top is a long, rectangular framed integral suspension loop. The frame of the loop is angular in cross section and the aperture of t…

A complete Medieval or post Medieval copper alloy crotal or tumbler bell, cast in one piece, dating to c AD 1500 - 1700. It is spherical in shape with trapezoidal, pyramidical in section, loop, in which the opening was probably originally circular but is now oval, elongated at the top of the opening due to wear. There are two circular sound holes in the upper hemisphere and a central ridge or girth rib, with tool marks apparent where it has been filed to reduce it close to the body of the bell. The slot extends across the whole of the lower half of the bell, with circular expansions a…

A copper-alloy loop, probably the suspension loop from a large crotal bell dating to 1650-1950. The loop is C-shaped rotated 90 degrees in plan and circular in cross-section. The curve of the loop is wider and thicker and has a rectangular cross-section. The bell loop was probably made using a detachable 'sprue-piece', this method was introduced in the 17th century. Date: Post medieval Length: 19.1mm Width: 17.6mm Thickness: 5.1mm at curve, 4.5mm at ends. Weight: 5.84g

Base fragment of a large cast copper alloy bell which has broken along the slit between two circular holes, producing a 'dumbbell' shape in plan, with half of one of those holes still extant. Above the slit is an incised linear border and part of the semi-circular 'sun', around the maker's initial 'R' with an annulet on either side, with linear rays emanating from it, decorating part of this half of the sphere. Each ray consists of two or three parallel incised lines, which may have curved into a rounded terminal, but these are now missing. There would have been a metal ball clapper w…
