Large flaked axe. Rough-out for polishing. Light grey flint with frequent darker grey and white mottles and patches. Thick white and greyish patina with iron staining at the edges of the flaking scars. Butt and cutting edge have been broken off in recent times (?plough damage). The axe is a long, gently flaring shape and is extensively flaked on both surfaces. It is a pointed oval in cross section. Both sides have a longitudinal ridge (off-centre) from which the flakes were removed.

Fragment of a cast copper alloy axe blade of Middle to Late Bronze Age date. It is not possible to establish whether it is from a palstave or a socketed axe because there only 20mm remains of the length.

Neolithic flint axe. Miniature polished flint axe. It is almost completely ground. A few flaking scars remain on one side. There are striations visible. It is a tapering shape with a broad cutting edge and narrow butt end. The butt end is rounded. In section it is gently convex in both planes but not very thick. The cutting edge is more polished than other areas and is convex. One face is completely polished, the other face retains traces of flaking scars along it's edges and at the butt, however there is polish in the flaking scars. It has a cream coloured patination with some greyer …

The pointed butt end of a Neolithic polished stone axe. The cutting end of the axe has snapped of in antiquity, possibly at a point of weakness visible in the break. The entire remaining fragment has a heavy patina of buff-brown colour with no recent damage precluding a view of the original colour of the flint. Because this is the butt end of the axe, the polishing has not penetrated into every flaked hollow leaving some neagtive flake scars. Butt ends were frequently left not fully polished, possibly to enable more secure hafting. The axe is of the thick butted type with a broad, len…

Polished stone tool, probably an axe of Neolithic date. The tool is roughly trapizoid in plan and rectangular in section with slightly convex sides. The surface is covered in peck marks remaining from the shaping process and the blade and parts of the larger sides are polished. The butt is rough and broken suggesting the axe was once longer, in keeping with the proportions of other polished axes of this period. The blade is sharply angled in from the sides at c.60 degrees and meets in a 120 degree angle in the centre; it has a slight convex curve. The angle of the blade is much sharper…

Fragment of palstave axe, Middle Bronze Age. A fragment of a palstave axe. A fragment from the butt of the axe . The terminal is rounded and the butt tapers towards it. It has a rectangular cross section. There is a slight projection at the side on one face of the object which is likely to be the start of a flange along the side of the axe. Dimensions: 19.08 mm x 23.27 x 7.03 mm

A polished flint axe head dating to the early to mid Neolithic (BC 3500 - 2500). White flint with some grey mottling. The blade edge is 61mm wide, tapering down to a narrowed blunt end 30mm wide. The blunt narrow end is broken and chipped. The axe is approximately 130mm long. it is oval in section. There are no obvious signs that this particular axe was used for chopping or cutting, as the blade is very sharp with no signs of wear. On one side there are also two holes, caused by narural weakness in the flint. These holes are intriguing, as they would weaken the axe if used funct…

A complete flint axehead of late Neolithic date BC 3500-2100 with a polished tip. The axehead is drop shape in plan and ovate in section. The dorsal surface is invasively flaked across the entire surface. The proximal edge is ground and polished to create a precise cutting edge, there is some slight notching to the polished aspect of the edge. The distal end tapers into a narrowed profile, the end is abruptly blunted. The ventral surface is unflaked being the cortex. The blade has been polished, the remainder of the axehead has not. It is 129.12mm in length and 49.66mm in width. It…
