A flint awl or piercer of probable Neolithic date. The proximal end is unworked and retains the outer, rounded pebble cortex. Above this on the dorsal face are three long, thin, parallel flaking scars. The distal end has then been worked to a point by retouching both edges from around the mid-point onwards. The object therefore has a rounded butt with a long, thin piercer extending from this, curving downwards slightly and tapering a little towards the end. A crested blade which has been adapted to make an awl or borer. A crude crested blade of dark grey brown translucent flint with an area of abraded nodule cortex and a low gloss patina. Both the proximal and distal ends of the original flake have been removed. The dorsal face is crested and the edges have been worked from the ventral face. Crested blades are created in preparing a blade core in order to get a more predictable strike.There is some crude abrupt retouch at the distal end, probably in order to shape the flake into an awl. An incomplete probably Bronze Age (2150-800 BC) copper alloy awl or punch, missing much of its tang. It measures 43.77x(max)8.12x(max)6.62mm and weighs 8.02g. The tang is circular in cross-section and worn at its break, where is measures 4.97mm in diameter. The 'working end' of the awl measures 8.10x6.65mm where the tang extends and is oval in cross-section, but with the longer edges flattened. It tapers to c.4.5x4.1mm where the tip widens to 4.6mm in diameter and then arrows again to the point (now 1.3mm in diameter).

A copper alloy awl or gouge. The awl has a rectangular cross section. It tapers towards both ends from the centre. One side tapers on all four faces and terminates in a sub circular sectioned point. The other side tapers on two opposite sides to produce a wedge shaped terminal. There is a short, wide groove on the upper and lower faces of the terminal, suggesting this may be a small gouge. The mid section has a square cross section and either end tapers extends into a long tapering point with a circular cross section.This created four lozengiform faces on the mid section. Cast copper alloy awl. The the awl is sub-circular in cross-section and is faceted longitudinally. It tapers to a point at both ends. One end is slightly thicker than the other and is damaged and corroded. Date: Bronze Age - c. 2150 - 800 BC Dimensions: 47.62 mm x 6.62 mm Weight: 5.77g Plain copper alloy awls are hard to date precisely but ones of this form are known to have been introduced in the Bronze Age (2150-800 BC) with most being Late Bronze Age in date (1150-800 BC).

A copper-alloy Bronze Age to Medieval copper-alloy awl 1250 BC-AD 1500. The find consists of four straight sides, each one plain, and rectangular in section. Its midpoint is bulbous and the awl tapers inwards terminating in rounded points at each end. Plain copper alloy awls are hard to date precisely but examples of this form are thought to have been introduced in the Bronze Age and they have barely changed throughout the centuries.
