A corroded iron tang knife. The knife has a short blade ( 25 mm ) and longer, narrower tang (35mm) with parallel sides and flat surfaces. Whittle-tang knives were used over a long period of time, from Early-Medieval to the post-Medieval periods. This example is probably from the Early-Medieval period. A well defined keyhole horseshoe with four rectangular nail holes to each branch.Three of the nails are still in place and reveal the T-shaped heads.Slightly fullered with no calkins. A corroded medieval iron horseshoe fragment of the wavy-rimmed type (Clark type 2B) (c. 12th-13th century). This fragment forms part of the left branch with two oval nail holes and calkin present. Ivan G Sparkes (9-10) notes that this would of been attached with fiddle-headed nails and although they sat within the countersunk depressions, the nail heads still protruded by almost half their length. Dimensions are Length 76.9 mm Width 21 mm Thickness 6.2 mm Weight 39 g.

A forged iron latch which is probably from a door or window.The latch has been hand forged from a rectangular bar which would have been approximately 14 mm x 7 mm in section. The roundel has been hammered out and has a tapered profile. The attachment end has a circular loop hole of c.10mm diameter which was probably made using a punch. The downturned hook end has been drawn to a point, with a single hammer blow to create the swan neck. The latch has been hand forged from a bar with rectangular cross section, measuring approximately 12mm wide by 7 mm high. One third of the way along from the hook end is a roundel which has been hammered out and has a tapered profile. There is a section of this roundel missing, due to corrosion. An iron double oval Post-Medieval buckle. The frame has a slightly recessed central strap bar. The pin remains in situ, although its tip is now missing. In Meols (2007, p.189) it is suggested that double oval buckles, which are occasionally iron such as this one, are usually of mid-14th to as late as 17th century date. A wrought iron key of medieval date, which is attached to a copper alloy ring (SOMDOR-98BF43), along with a latchlifter (SOMDOR-988E62). The key has a long, flat, rectangular sectioned shank with a splayed head. This narrows into a backward loop for attachment to the copper alloy ring. At the other end, the bit projects forwards at a right angle to the shank. The wards form a broken cross in the centre of the bit (the opening is at the front). Dimensions: 174.20mm x 30.02mm x 28.79mm. Weight 72.50g.

A wrought latchlifter of medieval date, which is attached to a copper alloy ring (SOMDOR-98BF43), along with a padlock key (SOMDOR-986144). The latchlifter has a long, circular sectioned shank with a splayed head which narrows into a backward loop for attachment to the copper alloy ring. At the other end, the bit is rectangular sectioned and is bent up and forwards at a right angle to the shank. It then turns twice at right angles back towards the shank. Dimensions: 186.20mm x 28.53mm x 30.30mm. Weight 94.63g.

A Medieval iron barrel padlock case of Goodall's Type D (in Biddle, 1990), with a hinged shackle, locked and corroded in place. The spring and bolt are enclosed within the case. Barrel padlocks with shackles (Type D) were intended to secure human or animal limbs (Goodall 1990 p.1001). Examples from Winchester date from the late 10th to early 15th century. The case is cylindrical and c.30mm in cross-section, widening to c.40mm diameter at the open end. A large iron key. The bow is kidney-shaped with a point on the outer edge. The shank is rectangular in cross-section and widens slightly towards the ward, The pin is narrowed from the main part of the shank and tapers to a point. The ward is rectangular with a slightly asymmetrical cross-shaped central cleft. The iron is corroded. Similar to an example illustrated in Egan, G 1998, "The Medieval Household", page 118, number 327 which is further identified as a Ward Perkins 1940, type VII. The two branches are equal in form, with three nail holes to each branch, of which two retain the heads of their nails, within the fullered groove. The heels are tapered and thickened, with no calkins. The shoe has a slightly arched inner form and a slightly concave hoof side. Probably a draught shoe of circa 1650-1700.
