A complete, large iron Medieval to Post Medieval key, dating to c. AD 1150-1650. The object resembles a Type 8 key (Saunders, 2012). The bow is oval. The stem thickens in the middle, is circular in shape, and extends beyond the bit. The bit is rectangular and symmetrical in shape, indicating it is probably a door key, and has a central cleft. The bit and stem are in line. The key displays some corrosion, and if there originally was any decoration on the stem or bow, it is no longer visible. The object is covered with corrosion products. An iron key (locking) of Medieval to Post-Medieval date. The key has a 'D' shaped' bow at the end of the circular cross-sectioned stem. There is a circular collar just behind the bit nearest the bow. The bit would have comprised two irregular projections, but the furthest one from the bow is broken away at the shaft. Type 8 of the Goodall Classification used at Winchester and Salisbury (Salisbury Medieval Catalogue Volume 4), having a solid shaft projecting beyond the bit. Iron spearhead of probably late Medieval date. The blade is complete and a broad leaf shape with convex curved sides widening evenly form the point to the rounded base of the blade. A rounded rib runs from the socket about half way along the length of the blade on both sides; the ribs thicken towards the base but appear solid. The blade is otherwise flat and even in thickness. Due to the level of corrosion it is hard to identify the width of the sharpened edges, if any. The socket is conical and tapering, continuing the line of the ribs but only hollow until it meets the blade. The en…

A worn and corroded dove type horseshoe of medieval date. Both branches are equal in length and both are tapered towards the heel, which has been thickened by the addition of folded back calkins. There are three sub-rectangular nail holes to each branch; these are countersunk, probably to facilitate the use of T-shaped nails. The inner and outer arches are rounded with the heels wide apart. This small shoe is probably a saddle shoe of circa late 13th to early 14th century. Length of shoe 97.84 mm. Width of shoe 95.46 mm. Thickness 5.41 mm. Weight 100 grams. Reference Ivan G. Sparkes…

Incomplete forged iron knife, with a broken blade at one end, and tapering towards the tang at the other end which is bent at a 45 degree angle. The upper edge and the blade edge have parallel sides in plan, from the break until the blade starts to taper towards the tang, at an oblique angle. One face of the knife is forged and tapered in three stages, as it narrows to the cutting edge, in section. The opposite face is flat, suggesting that this blade was used to cut sideways, perhaps as part of a pair of shears, or used like a 'currier' knife which was used for cutting and paring lea…

A very worn and corroded fragment of an iron dove type horseshoe. The piece consists of the right branch. Three sub-circular nail holes are evident and are countersunk to accept T-shaped nails. One T-shaped nail head has corroded within a hole close to the toe. The heel has the remains of a calkin but corrosion has probably eroded this, rather than wear. A corroded right branch of a probable medieval dove type horseshoe with evidence of a calkin at the heel. The branch has three sub-rectangular holes with recesses to accept T-shaped nails. The external edge appears to be a wavy line where the nail holes have been punched through. The toe section is thickened. It is unusual to see a thickened toe section on worn and corroded shoes and it is possible that this may be a half shoe. I believe half shoes were used on oxon. Although i have classed this as a dove shoe, the wavy edge may indicate an earlier date.
