A fragment of glass, part (about half) of the circular base of a vessel, probably a wine or brandy bottle, of Post Medieval date, perhaps c AD 1600 -1800. The glass was perhaps originally dark green or blue, now translucent, and all surfaces, including the broken edges are now coated with pearlescence. The outer surface, however is more cloudy. The lower/underside of the fragment is a domed punt ('push-up' or 'kick-up') from the base. A jagged low section of the wall of the bottle is part of the fragment. There are no seam or mould marks on the extant fragment, so probably free-blown,…

A fragment of clear, uncoloured glass dating from either the Roman period or Post-medieval. The fragment is very roughly triangular in shape measuring 41.5mm by 39.4mm by 29.7mm. It is of uneven thickness to a maximum of 2.3mm. The piece is curved, the degree of curvature (i.e. distance from the central part of the convex area to a line joining the furthest extremities) being c7mm. Very small air bubbles can be seen within the glass as well as specks of other material that are mostly very small though one irregular piece measures c6 x 3mm. There are faint striations created during its…

A cast copper alloy oval setting containing an opaque blue glass intaglio, with a trace of a red border around the edge of intaglio and a bevelled edge to the copper alloy frame. The red material is probably setters wax, made of shellac and turpentine or resin, which was used to hold the glass intaglio within the frame. There is a trace of white substance on the edges of the frame of the intaglio, perhaps lead solder. The intaglio depicts a bust of a head facing right. The image appears to be a male head wearing a wig with layers of curls, that is tied at the back of the head, and wit…

A semi-translucent turquoisey cobalt blue coloured glass bead of an an uncertain date. It has a globular shape with a large off centre circular perforation measuring 3.89mm in diameter. The bead has a D-shaped cross section and the internal structure displays numerous small bubbles. Glass beads are very difficult to date with any certainty without contextual evidence and the lack of clear diagnostic features on this example means that it is not possible to date this bead any more closely than Roman through to Medieval. Compare CORN-30641A which is very similar. Diameter: 8.98mm. Thi…

A glass Roman intaglio dating to the period c. AD 43 - 410. The intaglio is oval in shape and features a design which Martin Henig has posited depicts a horse running or flying left with a human figure which may be swimming below (pers.comms.). The intaglio is made from blue glass and has a slightly matte surface and is shiny where there is more recent damage. Martin Henig (pers. comms.) has commented that the intaglio appears to be moulded rather than cut. The design of a horse running is not uncommon and is often accompanied by a human figure. The closest known parallel for this exa…

A Roman blue glass intaglio. The intaglio is oval in plan and sub-hemispherical in profile with a flat undecorated reverse. It measures 11.46mm in length, 9.54mm in width, it is 2.02mm thick and weighs 0.33g. The glass is a dark blue on the reverse with a lighter blue face, probably in imitation of nicolo. The intaglio depicts a kneeling warrior with spear and shield. Martin Henig has dated this intaglio to the first century BC or 1st century AD and believes that it may have originally come from an early Roman fort.
