Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A cast lead weight of uncertain date. The weight is circular in plan. It is decorated unifacially; the lower face is marked and worn but seemingly only as a result of old damage. The upper face features a design rendered in relief. It may represent a figure advancing right with a staff, or, the other way up, perhaps the Roman numerals 'III' or the letter 'IN', below which a pair of 'C' shapes and a transverse line. At 47.7g it is equivalent to around one-and-a-half troy ounces, or around one-and-two-thirds ounces avoirdupois. Biggs and Withers (2000, 24-26) features two round flat wei…

Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A fragment from a later early-medieval strap-end of 9th/10th-century date. The fragment comprises the attachment end of a tongue-shaped strap-end. The attachment end itself is recessed on both surfaces; the lower recessed area (L.: 8.0mm) is longer than the upper (L.: 5.9mm). The flaring before the recesses gives the fragment a maximum width of 3.6mm. Within the thinned section are two perforations, albeit misaligned. One is within a corner and has abraded through. The other is closer to the thickened section and further from the corner; the adjacent corner has been lost.. The main th…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A cast copper-alloy circular trade weight of post-medieval (17th-century) date. The weight has a low rim (W.: 1.7mm) on its upper surface. Within is a punch at the centre of a flat field. Around this are numerous fine concentric lines from the manufacturing process. Punched within the rim at around 1 o'clock is the sword of St Paul (for the City of London). At 6 o'clock is a ewer (for the Founder's Company, maker of weights), while at around 12 o'clock the royal cipher has been struck. This latter is the crowned initial 'C', denoting King Charles, although one cannot distinguish betwee…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A corroded and bent cast copper-alloy hooked mount of post-medieval date (c. 16th/17th century). The mount is sub-oval in plan with a rounded attachment knop. It tapers towards the forward-facing hook, broken at its tip. The hook is now slightly misaligned following an old strike to this end. The knop is perforated for a now missing rivet. There is a second rivet hole just above the hook within the field. This hole retains orange corrosion product from an iron rivet. The field is bordered by a raised line; the second rivet hole also has an annular border. Within the recessed field …

Object type: AMPULLA
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A corroded, damaged and incomplete cast lead-alloy medieval pilgrim's ampulla. The remaining part is the rounded flask, with its sub-circular lower chamber. The ampulla is decorated bifacially on the lower chamber. On both sides is the same motif of a crowned? heart with fine cross-hatching within a linear border (it is possible that there is a crown on the other side). This motif, or similar, has been found on ampullae found in Salisbury (Spencer 1990, 91; ref. 186), London, Maltby Springs, Lincs., and Brandon in Suffolk (ibid., 60; ref. 132), and in many other locations besides (the…

Object type: FIGURINE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A cast copper-alloy object of probable later medieval or post-medieval date: probably a figurine. The object is moulded on the upper surface; the lower surface is flat. The figurine would appear anthropomorphic, but with arms truncated at the elbows and without a head! Longitudinal ridges on the upper surface are suggestive of drapery. A possible foot appears separated while the other is closer in to the body. The lower surface features a number of slightly wavy transverse lines. At the 'head' end is a small, somewhat off-centre hole into which a rivet on a seperate object might …

Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A fragment from a cast copper-alloy Roman brooch, probably best classified as a trumpet derivative. The fragment consists of the head, upper bow and integral chain loop; the rest of the brooch is missing. The chain loop, which would have been sub-circular, has been largely truncated as a result of old damage. There is a pair of transverse ridges at its junction with the head. Below is a ridge along the width of the head, 15.6mm wide. This notably wide upper bow tapers to a width of 5.4mm at the break. The sides of the bow are faceted. The lower surface of the bow is recessed. At …

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A corroded, damaged and incomplete cast lead-alloy medieval pilgrim's ampulla. The artefact is flask-shaped, with a rounded, sub-circular lower chamber. The upper half is broadly rectangular, seemingly expanding slightly at the top (W.: 21.2mm). The top has suffered extensive losses on both sides. The suspension loop/handle lugs are now both vestigial. Level with them is a puncture through one face, which, on the other, extends to a large loss to one side. Below this the lower chamber is depressed with a central puncture. The ampulla is decorated bifacially on the lower chamber. On one…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A damaged cast copper-alloy Roman bow-and-fantail brooch, incomplete in that it is missing its pin. At the head is an integral circular chain loop, bent downwards as a result of old damage. Below is a plain tubular crossbar (W.: 14.05mm) which housed the axis bar. Orange-brown corrosion product at the terminals and around the pin slot suggest that the axis bar was made of iron. The pin would have hinged around the bar in the central longitudinal slot. The head tapers into the bow which is reeded, with a central longitudinal ridge within a border. At the foot the expanded triangular …

A worn but complete cast copper-alloy post-medieval mount. The mount is asymmetrical, terminating in a crude trifoliate head, with lozengiform central fleur. Below this the body expands before contracting to a small rounded element which itself terminates in a crude knop. The mount is of a dark red-brown colour with small patches of green corrosion product, and slight traces of gilding. On the reverse is a pair of pointed lugs bent round towards each other: one is towards the base of the trefoil, the other at the junction of the body and circular element; this latter has been bent sli…

A fragmentary cast copper-alloy medieval composite buckle frame with forked spacer. The oval frame has a central, pointed lip, and corresponding pin notch on the inner surface. The pin is missing and the prongs broken where they would have been recessed to take the pair of sheet plates. The spacer has a rectangular aperture next to the frame (W.: 3.2mm). The buckle frame and spacer have a variable …

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A fragment from a medieval cast copper-alloy buckle plate. The rectangular plate was once formed of a thick bent sheet folded double with a recessed pin notch; the plate has broken at the beginning of the recess and less than one half now survives. The buckle frame and pin have been lost. There is a pair of rivet holes at the attachment end, another pair at the frame end, and a fifth in the centre of the sheet. Traces of a zig-zag border suvive on the upper surface, as do areas of gilding, particularly around the rivet holes. The object is now a red-brown colour with patches of green a…
