Object type: TONGS
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete small cast copper-alloy object, thought to be the stem and terminal of tongs used for sugar or similar foodstuffs, of post-medieval date (c.1600-1900). The terminal is broadly semicircular in plan with a gradual curve towards the stem of the handle and has a shallow circular dishing within the bowl's upper surface. The stem is twisted to give a rope effect; it is sub-circular in cross-section. The object has a dark grey patina consistent with a probable post-medieval date. For similar items see KENT-41E304 and SUR-748FF3.

CORONER'S REPORT
A hoard of 303 bronze socketed axes, broken socketed axes and socketed axe fragments. A full catalogue has been produced for this hoard but is not offered here; it is available on request from the Department of Portable Antiquities and Treasure at the British Museum. Rather, the axes, all being similar with one exception, are discussed as a group.
All but one of the axes in this hoard appear to be of Type Portland (Bruns pers. comm.), which dates to the Llyn Fawr stage of the Bronze Age (LBA4) (800-600BC) (Needham et al. 1997; O'Connor 2007). Thi…
