A worn uninscribed copper-alloy Iron Age stater of the Durotriges, South Western region, dating from c. 65 BC to AD 45. The coin is of the "Cranborne Chase" type. Due to wear, the shape of the coin is sub-triangular - like that of a shield. On the obverse, all that remains is a vertical pin shape that covers almost half the surface, with a wide crescent above it and another narrow crescent shape to the right of this. Near the bottom right hand edge of the obverse, are a group of worn pellets. On the reverse, much of the surface is covered by very worn pellets r…

County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete cast copper alloy Iron Age or Roman mount dating to the period c. 300BC - AD 100. It is possibly a decorative shield clip, although it has also been suggested that this type of mount derives from a bucket, tankard or vessel. As this example contains remnants of iron decay in its interior, it has been suggested that it may originate from a bucket style vessel, akin to those of the Aylesford Swarling type (J. Ahmet pers.comm). It is formed of a single sheet of copper alloy which is now tubular in shape. It has a series of curving ridges which give it a sligh…

An Iron Age 'Duro Boat' gold quarter stater dating from c. 80 - 50 BC. The following comments are from Ian Leins, British Museum: 'The stater was produced in Dorset, Hampshire, the Isle of Wight and surrounding counties in about 80 - 50 BC. It is published in the major catalogues of Iron Age coinage (details below). The front is an abstract design apparently based on a boat. The back is even more abstract, making it difficult to determine the original inspiration for the design, although it is often described as a 'thunderbolt'. The metal is likely to be an alloy of gold and silver. E…
