Object type: LAUREL LEAF
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A bifacially worked laurel leaf knife made on a flake of Portland chert. The chert is opaque and dark grey in colour with a low-gloss patina, the knife is sub-oval with an irregular outline. One face has covering, sub-parallel, low angle retouch, the other has similar, but is marked by three stepped flake scars terminating in deep hinge fractures. It is possible that this piece could also be an abandoned roughout for an arrowhead. Date: Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age - 3300 to 1600 BC. Dimensions: 49.1mm x 34.3mm x 8.2mm. Weight: 13.1g.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A unifacially worked knife made on a flake of Portland chert. The chert is opaque and dark grey in colour with a low-gloss patina, the knife is sub-triangular in shape with a triangular cross section. The dorsal face right side margin shows semi invasive scaled, semi abrupt retouch, possibly pressure flaked, this extends around the proximal end and part of the distal end. The ventral face shows a low bulb of percussion indicating probable use of a soft hammer, however there are strong ripples and a bulbar scar. There is slight flaking to straighten the left side edge, this would class…

A unifacially worked knife made on a large flake of Portland chert. The chert is opaque and dark to mid grey in colour with a low gloss patina, the knife is oval with an irregular triangular cross section. The bulb of percussion has been removed from the ventral face; semi invasive, scalar low angle retouch is visible along medial parts of both margins; one edge has and area of fine long, scalar, low angle retouch to the distal end, which may be use-damage or post-depositional as it is discontinuous. Note the high gloss areas on the dorsal surface are unlikely to be edge-gloss, more l…

A sub-oval flake of Portland chert with possible deliberate notches. The chert is opaque, mid-grey in colour with beige mottles and a large oval beige inclusion, the patina is low-gloss. A possible deliberate notch is visible on the right side margin of the dorsal face near the proximal end and another at the distal end. A third sharper notch on the left side margin is probably due to modern post-depositional damage. The dorsal face shows flake removal scars with strong ripples, the ventral face shows no apparent bulb of percussion indicating probable use of a soft hammer, there are h…

Object type: AXEHEAD ROUGHOUT
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A thin flaked flint implement, possibly an axe rough-out. One end rounded, one end rectilinear. The object is bifacially flaked and broken at one end. The flaking is well executed using a soft hammer to form a slightly plano-convex cross section. The margins taper slightly inward from the break to an irregular sub-rounded butt. The break is cross-body and is typical of end-shock during manufacture. The original flint appears to be light grey and mottled, now with an all over pale grey glossy patina, with some reddish brown ferrous staining. Date: Neolithic 4000 to 2351 BC. Dimen…

An incomplete bifacially worked tool, probably a flaked dagger rough-out, broken at one end. The distal tip end is sub-rounded, the broken end rectilinear, the object is broad, but relatively well thinned (c 4.5/1 width/thickness ratio) with well executed invasive, scaled, low angle soft hammer flaking forming a lenticular cross-section. The margins are slightly convex with well developed centre lines and taper inwards slightly. The break is flat and runs straight across the body of the piece; it probably represents a flex-break or end shock originating at a coarse inclusion within th…

Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A crude flint pick with an irregular cross section, comprising opportunistic use of a naturally fractured nodule fragment, retaining thick, worn chalky cortex over approximately half of one face. Rough shaping has comprised removal of large, steep flakes from one edge to form a very marked, coarse zig-zag margin (one flake near the tip maybe later but has partially re-cortified) finer shaping of the tip was achieved by finer unifacial flaking to form a rounded end. The whole object is deeply recortified, white flint, where exposed, ranges from coarse matt on natural breaks, through to…

Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Part of a possible flint chisel. The object appears to be the butt-end of a narrow, elongate bifacially worked tool, probably broken during manufacture. One end rounded, one end rectilinear. Both faces exhibit covering, scaled, semi-abrupt (in places stepped) flaking to form a lozenge shaped cross section. The midline edges are slightly irregular but straight overall, and the butt is irregular in shape. The break is near perpendicular to the long axis and is probably the result of end-shock during manufacture; a second angled facet to the break on one face is noted, co-inciding with a…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A re-utilised flint core, re-used as a hammerstone. Originally a core comprising of at least six large to medium sized flakes taken from two platforms from a naturally fractured nodule fragment of flint with thick chalky cortex surviving at one end and part of one side. The core has been re-utilised as a hammerstone; evidence of this can be seen in an area of well developed characteristic impact chatter and abrasion running around almost half of the circumference. An area of cortex appears to been utilised for grip and is unaffected. The object has high-gloss surfaces where flint is e…

Object type: PICK
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint pick formed on a naturally fractured piece of flint. The pick has been formed by removal of two or three large, steep flakes from one edge, by minor flaking of both ends and part of the edge. There is some deliberate battering of the worked edges. The original colour of the flint cannot be discerned. All exposed surfaces have well developed off white patination with a mid gloss patina and common red brown ferrous stains. Date: Neolithic (probably) 4000 to 2351BC Dimensions: 91.4mm x 42.4mm x 30.6mm. Weight: 135g.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
One part of a possible flaked axe or pick roughout, probably broken during manufacture. Both faces show evidence for crude, sometimes deep flaking to form an assymetrical sub-lozengiform cross section. One face retains a large patch of thick, worn chalky cortex. One end tapers to an irregular point, and there is slight evidence for deliberate battering of part of one edge. The break is oblique, both longitudinally and laterally, and may be a result of end-shock during manufacture. The break has formed a platform from which two short flakes have been removed on one side of the object, …
