Flint axe. Probable tranchet axe of Late Mesolithic date. Long, oval flaked axe with an oval cross section. Off-white flint with a heavy patina and orange iron staining. This object was unearthed many years ago and has been curated by the owners, hence its yellow-brown "mantlepiece" patina. The butt of the axe is tapered almost to a point. The axe is extensively flaked along both edges. The flakes are broad. The cutting edge is formed by similar broad flaking. The diagnostic transverse flake of a tranchet axe has been obscured by subsequent flaking or re-working. However, the overall …

Flint tranchet axe of Late Mesolithic date. The axe has rounded ends and expands in plan from the butt to the blade end; It is pointed oval in longitudinal and transverse cross section. It is 101.8mm long, 45.2mm wide and 24.7mm thick; it weighs 120 grams. It is made of pale grey flint with a heavy white patina. There are remains of original cortext at the butt end and small patches on both sides. The axe is extensively flaked on both sides. On one side there is evidence of large flake removal at the butt and down the sides and long, parallel semi-abrupt removals from the blade; the c…

An incomplete flint axehead of Mesolithic date., The butt appears to have been broken off in antiquity. The tip and one edge appear to have suffered recent damage, the opposite edge has numerous small flaking scars which appear to be retouching. There is evidence of several transverse flakes being removed from one edge and these are highlighted with iron staining to the ridges of each one. It is roughly oval in cross section with one face having a slight central ridge. It is patinated to a semi matt pale grey colour to one face the other face is dark brown with less siliceous patches.…

An incomplete flint axe. A large tranchet axe of the Mesolithic. The cutting edge and part of the body of the axe only remains, the butt having been broken off in antiquity. It is made from pale mid grey and grey brown flint with less siliceous patches and bands. It is patinated to a matt, pale grey colour with some iron staining. There are numerous flaking scars on all the surfaces, with several transverse flakes removed from one edge and resulting in an off-centre ridge along the length of the axe. The body of the axe has an irregular triangular cross section which, as the axe is sh…

A Mesolithic tranchet axehead dating to 10,000 BC - 4000 BC. The axehead is small and irregular in shape. It has a broadly trapezoidal cross-section and is crudely parallel sided, tapering to a blunt point at the butt-end. Both faces are formed by irregular steep to semi-invasive flaking and the edges are of irregular 'zig-zag' form with only slight battering. The cutting edge is steeply profiled and both offset from, and angled to, the main axis of the axe. Both faces show cross-body, covering flakes, one of which has only partially traversed the axe. Made on light grey mottled flint…

A complete knapped flint 'Thames pick' type Tranchet axe dating to the Mesolithic period (c.9000 - 4000BC).
The object is elongated ovoid shape inplan with a roundedbutt and bladed edge. It is roughly D-shaped in cross-section although highly irregular. It is slightly wasted around its'middle of the object. The object has long flaking covering much of the object but with a patch of cortex along the middle of the facing without the tranchet flake. There is a small transverse flake along the edge of the of one face creating an edge at the wide end, this technique is generally associa…

A light grey flint tranchet axehead. Mid grey and grey-brown mottled flint with a small area of nodule cortex remaining. The surface has a milky, glossy patina and some iron staining. The axe tapers towards the butt and has a lenticular to sub-triangular cross section. Along one long side the edge is straight and the opposite edge is twisted. There is extensive, broad flaking from the edges over all surfaces. The margins are blunted and abraded. The cutting edge has been formed by removal of a single transverse (tranchet) flake from one face of the axe.

A flaked flint pick or possible tranchet axe dating to a late Mesolithic to early Neolithic period. The pick is made on an elongate sub-cylindrical nodule of mottled grey flint with an asymmetric/irregular cross-section. One end is formed by rough bifacial flaking and may originally have been transversely flaked on one face to form a tranchet cutting edge (although this is much damaged, possibly in antiquity which may be attempts at secondary sharpening but have left part of this end with a flat facetted edge). The other end retains a large area of slightly worn cortex and has been cr…

Part of a flint tranchet axehead. The object is irregularly bifacially flaked, with an asymmetrical cross-section. The margins are crude and sometimes markedly 'zig-zag': there are some areas of deliberate battering to blunt them. The cutting edge (now damaged, either in use or post-loss) is formed by removal of an oblique flake across the end of the axe. The break is slightly oblique, the presence of a small bulb on one edge of the break may indicate deliberate 'anvil' breakage. The axe has a matt off white , all over patina with some reddish brown ferrous stains.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A tranchet axe with an irregular, variable cross-section, made on a naturally fractured, weathered nodule of mottled opaque pale grey flint. The piece is crudely bifacially flaked, one face retains a substantial area of thick weathered cortex, the other is flaked all over. The sharp cutting edge is formed by oblique removal of a small 'tranchet' flake. Unusually, the butt end is also sharp and may have been reworked to form an alternative cutting edge, also by oblique flake removals on both faces.
The margins are irregular and show evidence of deliberate battering to blunt them. Th…

A possible tranchet axe. A small, irregularly flaked flint axe with an apparent failed tranchet sharpening at the cutting edge. Pale grey mottled flint, sometimes very coarse, with heavy off white-grey patina. Very sparse red-brown ferrous staining in places. Both long edges are extensively flaked on one edge and more irregularly flaked on the other, creating an irregular cross section. Both edges are straight but irregular, and there is an irregularly sub-rounded butt. At the opposite end, there is a large, deep flake removal at one edge, but the flake di…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A small serrated bladelet manufactured on a secondary flake of flint. Elongate with one end rounded and one end rectilinear with a trapezoidal cross-section, the flint is semi-opaque and mid-grey, now covered in a thin layer of speckled re-cortification giving a low-gloss patina. Cortex remains along the whole of the left side margin of the dorsal face. The left side margin of the ventral face is almost entirely covered in a fine serrated re-touch with around 16 teeth.

Mesolithic flint end scraper. Fabricated from a secondary flake, it has a patinated white exterior with mid grey core. It has been knapped to produce an end scraper and side scraper and/or knife, both with worn retouches. The dorsal has a percentage of retained cortex that would aid with grip and applying pressure when utilising the tool as a knife. Dates from c10000 to c4001 BC.

A Portland chert sub-discoidal scraper. A hard hammer struck secondary flake of opaque Portland chert with an unusual deep red-brown semi-gloss patina. It has a wide striking platform at the proximal end. On the ventral face is a pronounced bulb of percussionand indistinct waves. The dorsal face has several multi-directional flaking scars. There is a projecting "beak" of off-white cortex on the left dorsal margin. Along the dorsal edge and right dorsal margin there is evidence for steep retouch, forming the flake into a scraper. THe retouch has created a somewhat irregular edge which…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Late Mesolithic to middle Neolithic dark caramel to grey flint scraper or sub triangular arrowhead, with extensive working, fabricated from a secondary flake. The fact that a ripple that provides lateral grip has been left in place suggests that it was used as a scraper. However, it may be a poorly executed ogival leaf shaped arrowhead. Dates from c7000 to c2701 BC.

The flake appears to be incomplete, with a large proportion of the flake lost to a recent break. The flint is brown-grey, patinated white on one face. The proximal end does not survive, and the conchoidal ripples are very diffuse. The flake exhibits little indication of deliberate knapping with the exception of a clear line of short, parallel abrup…
