Circumstances of discovery: Whilst searching with a metal detector
Description: Silver hollow cast sphere from a huntsman's whistle. The pea is now missing. Decoration is applied on both sides in the form of a quatrefoil motif with a plain cross running through the centre.
Discussion: This fragment was found within very close proximity to the Silver Huntman's whistle found in October 2002 (see 2005 T22; TAR 2995 - 2006), and as such is most likely to be part of the same artefact.
Due to its age and precious metal content, this item would qualify as treasure under the Trea…

A complete copper alloy whistle dating to the post medieval to modern period, c. AD 1700-1850.
The object is cylindrical in form, tapering to a narrower open mouthpiece. The opposite end is topped by a cast loop for suspension. This is seated on a series of circular ridges which encircle the whistle's body. There is a drilled circular aperture approximately 2/3 of the way down the body of the whistle to allow sound modulation. A metal reed is visible in the lower part of the whistle. There is a slender crack along the line of the seam, where the whistle is now coming apart.

Whetstone or hone. It is of fine grained dark stone, so may have served as a finishing hone. It is 65mm in length and has a suspension hole at the top edge. It has pronounced wear on the opposing faces. Hones were used for a long period of time, and this one may date from the 11th century, as one very similar was recovered during excavations in Exeter.

An incomplete whetstone of uncertain date and of a fine, greywacke sandstone. Rectangular in plan and sub-rectangualr in profile, the fragment terminates in worn breaks at either end. Due to abrasion to either face of the stone, in profile the whetstone tapers from 19.3mm wide at one end to 13.7mm at the other, with the narrowing being pronouncedly concave at one end and becoming more gradual below. This is more prominent on one face than the other.
Dimensions: length 50.5mm; width 21.8mm; thickness 19.3mm; weight 29.03g.
Whetstones were in use from the Bronze Age onwards, and w…

A whetstone formed from a sedimentary rock, possibly greywacke, of unknown age, dating to c. 1500 BC -AD 1900.
The whetstone is trapezoidal in shape and rectangular in section. It has a deep area of wear where it has been used for sharpening tools, which is discoloured and dark compared to the surrounding mid grey coloured stone. The wear has created a ridge where the objects being sharpened were brought backwards along the wear surface.
