Object type: RETOUCHED FLAKE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Devon
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint flake or bladelet of Mesolithic date (c. 9000 - 4000 BC). The flint is grey in colour. It is a secondary flake with a tiny area of cortex on the distal end of the flake remaining. The flake has a glossy surface, with a scattering of pale grey inclusions on the dorsal face. In plan it is sub-rectangular and in cross-section it is sub-triangular. At the proximal end, the bulb of percussion is missing due to a transverse break. However, the conchoidal fracture marks are present on the ventral surface; they are shallow, indicating that a soft hammer has bee…

Flint flake or bladelet of Mesolithic date (c. 9,000 - 4,000 BC). The flint is pale grey, almost white in colour and mostly translucent bar an opaque inclusion at the distal end, which extends about a third of the way down the length of the flint on one side and just a quarter of the length on the other side. There is a transverse break at the distal end. In plan and section the blade is sub-triangular; the proximal end narrows to a rounded point and the striking platform is not visible. It is a tertiary flake with a smal…

Object type: BLADE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Devon
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A small and delicate microlithic blade, dating to the Mesolithic to Neolithic periods, c. 5000-3000 BC. The blade is formed of a mid grey flint with a very small amount of white cortex surviving at the proximal end. It is trapezoidal in section and rectangular in plan, with a clear dorsal plateau. At the distal end is a small removal that creates a semblance of a tang, but the size of the blade suggests a Mesolithic date. It is similar to DEV-31451B, formed of similar flint beneath that example's heavily patinised surface. Measurements: 22.1mm length, 8.6mm width, 2.4mm t…

An assemblage of five small flint micro implements dating from the Mesolithic periods, c. 7000-4000 BC. All five are formed of the same dark grey black flint: 1) A blade formed on a secondary flake, with a tiny area of cortex surviving. Triangular in cross section, rectangular in shape, very slender and almost transparent at the cutting edges, which have been created using abrupt retouch. Slightly larger removals are present at the distal end, giving a slightly waisted appearance. 16mm length, 13.1mm width, 3.2mm thickness, weight 0.79g. 2) A microlith formed on a ve…

A flint micro-blade of the Mesolithic period 34 mm in length, 10.5 mm width and 3 mm in thickness. Both margins on the dorsal face are retouched to create the sharper edges. Part of the bulb of percussion remains on the ventral face at the proximal end with the resulting conchoidal ripples extending across the face to the opposite distal end. No cortex remains so this is a tertiary flake and may be a distance from where it was knapped as a product of the Mesolithic blade industry. The flint is pale grey with bands of darker grey flint so it has been derived from a local beach pebble. …

Of the flint pieces of debitage 27 are secondary, 30 are tertiary. 36 are a medium to dark grey colour some with white fleck and patch inclusions but others entirely lacking any. 15 are a creamy white colour wit occasional darker grey areas with some whiter flecks as well. A possible Microlith of Mesolithic date. The fragment is from a tertiary flake of flint. The flint is a brown grey colour with occasional white flecks. It has a semi-glossy patina. It is sub-rectangular in plan although the right edge, as seen from the dorsal surface, is slightly longer than the left and a rounded distal end. This distal end has short, parallel, semi-abrupt retouch on its dorsal surface. This dorsal surface also has two negative flake removals struck in the same direction as the flint. There is no bulb of percussion or ripples suggesting the use of a soft hammer an…
