Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Devon
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Gilt cast copper alloy casket mount or binding, rectangular in plan and section, with a single circular perforation within its rounded terminal which extends into a pointed knop. The opposite end is squared off and slightly chamfered, suggesting that it has not broken off from a longer piece, but some of the comparanda below have rounded and knopped terminals mirroring each other at either end. This mount may not have needed to be symmetrical in this way, but only has one rivet hole to keep it in place. The body of the mount is decorated with alternating raised and recessed squares, i…

Object type: BUTTON
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Devon
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Gilt copper alloy 'dandy' button, circular in plan and flat in profile, but missing its attachment loop on the back. The button face has been incised and then gilded with a central cross of nine pellets within a four-petalled flower. From each arched angle, between the petals, emanates an arm of a four-armed cross of bifid, V-shaped leaf motifs. The gilding that remains in the fields between the arms of the cross retains the chequered pattern of incised rows of pellets on a gird, creating a patchwork effect, perhaps trying to emulate woven textiles.

Gilt copper alloy 'dandy' button, octagonal in plan and flat in profile, but missing its attachment loop on the back. The button face has been incised and then gilded with a central six-petalled flower within a circle, surrounded by ten waisted trefoils bordered with pellets. Beyond these trefoils is a solid circular band with an outer border of solid semi-circular indented leaves within zig-zag arches. The small amount of gilding that remains around the edge of the button retains a few of the motifs from a pattern of what appears to be stars within further arches, creating a scalloped…

Object type: SHOE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Devon
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Incomplete sheet copper alloy miniature shoe, missing part of the sole, near the toe, and the heel, with two rectangular attachments for staples or studs to attach the shoe to the foot of a doll, probably made of wood. But the shoe is quite large for a doll's shoe and these are not normally made of metal, so it is more likely that this shoe would have held a pin cushion with the staples, within the aperture of the shoe. The recorder has seen similar brass examples of pin cushion holders on-line in the form of a Victorian shoe with a pointed toe and heel, and a decorative plate above t…

Object type: INGOT
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Devon
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Fragment of a cast copper alloy ingot which would have originally been circular in plan and plano-convex in profile, but this fragment is trapezoidal in plan, triangular in profile, and plano-convex in section, as it comes from one edge of the original ingot. Plano-convex ingots like this one were used during the Late Bronze Age, c.1150-700 BC. The upper face of the ingot is smooth with some dark green patches of patina, and coppery red areas of decay, and the sides and the base of the fragment have cavities typically seen in these bun ingots. Similar ingot fragments have been found i…

The frame has a bevelled inside edge and a recessed spindle for the cast copper alloy chape and pin. The chape has a trefoil and the pin is still resting on the curved outer edge of the frame. The frame is 24.7 mm long, 20 mm wide and 2.5 mm thick and the chape is 19 mm long, 10.6 mm wide and 2.3 mm thick. The pin is 10 mm long and 3 mm wide. Object type: COIN WEIGHT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Devon
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Four stamped copper alloy coin weights for the gold guineas and half guineas of George III (1760-1820) issued by Street & Pyke of Bridgwater (1773-1800), dated to 1775 on the reverses.
The four weights all have 'STREET & PYKE' on the obverses, and 'NEW STAND' (for 'new standard') and 1775 on the reverses. Each weight has numerals below the letters 'P' (for pennyweight) and 'G' (for grain). One coin weight, which weighs 8.3 g, has the numerals '5 : 8' under these letters, which would equate to 5 pennyweights and 8 grains. One pennyweight equates to 24 grains (Withers, 1995, 53), so …

Object type: HANGER
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Devon
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Incomplete cast copper alloy sword belt hanger, missing its hook at one end, with openwork decoration in the form of a trefoil plate with three apertures: two teardrop-shaped and one heart-shaped. The plate then narrows to a bifurcate collar, and then tapers slightly to a bar which is rectangular in plan, profile and section, and broken at its terminus. There is a rounded knop beyond the ovoid plate, which probably extended to encompass a rivet hole at this end of the hanger, and there may have been another attachment plate at the opposite end where the hanger tapers and is broken. Object type: TOY
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Devon
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Solid cast lead handle from the butt end of a toy pistol with two circular apertures at the broken end, within an expanded collar, which would have attached to the body of the gun. The central aperture is 4 mm in diameter, and judging from a complete example recorded in SWYOR-4634F5, the aperture would have held an iron rod to attach it to the barrel of the gun. The complete example has another matching collar at the end of the barrel, and a trigger mechanism to enable the gun to be fired. The handle has been decorated on both sides with three moulded curved lines, defined by four rec…

Object type: SPUR
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Devon
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Fragment of a cast copper alloy spur with a side that is hemispherical in section, with a lateral figure-eight terminal. One of the loops of the figure-eight terminal holds the hook of a stud chape which would in turn have attached to the undersole leather of the boot, to secure the spur. The hook expands into a circular plate which extends to a pointed terminal that holds the stud which is teardrop-shaped in plan and plano-convex in profile. There are patches of dark green patina on the surface of the side of the spur, but the chape is more corroded.

Object type: FERRULE
Broad period: MODERN
County: Devon
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Incomplete sheet copper alloy ferrule, oval in plan and U-shaped in profile, with textile still surviving within the metal shell. The ferrule is missing one side and has been flattened since being deposited, and would have originally been more circular in plan. There appears to be cross hatched strings, made of vegetable fibre, tied neatly around a package of compressed paper fibres, which have survived in the soil as they have been saturated by copper salts and protected but the copper alloy sheath (Laura Ratcliffe pers comm). The paper may have been used as wadding, but is more lik…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Small copper alloy figurine of Cupid or a putto (without wings) dating from the Roman period (c.AD 43-410) reclining on his side and holding out a cup in his right hand, as if at a banquet. The subject suggests that this was a mount on a vessel for serving wine. The figurine is three-dimensional, lying on one side with the left leg drawn up and the other extended (the lower part of this leg is missing) with the head pillowed on the left arm and the other arm extended down across the body holding a shallow rounded bowl or cup. The features are of a child, and although the item is now c…
