A large, broadly rectangular fragment from a ceramic box flue (hypocaust) tile of Roman date. One original edge survives at the end of one of the short edges, and one of the broken lateral edges is close to the point of one of the corners of the tile, which would have been cuboid-shaped with open ends. On the front of the tile there are two areas of diagonal combing, one overlying the other, to form an X. The complete (overlying) combed linear is 54mm wide and is formed from a comb with nine teeth. The sherd has oxidised orange surfaces and margins, and a reduced mid-grey/brown core. The rim is flared and slightly dished, with a flat, angled top and a slightly wavy outer edge. About 40 mm below the rim there is an internal ridge and at this point the wall angle changes, becoming steeper. There is a small splash of glaze beside the ridge. Measurements: 47 mm maximum height, 68 mm maximum width, weight 42.36 g overall Complete bowls of similar…

Pottery sherd, probably from a Medieval jug, made of fine, oxidised, slightly sandy fabric. Due to the flatness of the sherd it’s likely to be part of the base of a jug. c. 1200-1450 A.D. Measurements: length 24.86 mm, width 20.79 mm, thickness 5.59 mm, weight 3.41 g.

Two refitting sherds of post Medieval slipware pottery dating to c.17th century. The fabric is reduced dark grey and fairly smooth with occasional inclusions of calcareous and other stone and possibly grog. Both the internal and external faces are decorated with white slip under a green glaze. Where the external surface is not glazed it has slightly oxidised to a dark buff-grey. The sherds have been affected by heat, probably through burning. It is not possible to narrow down the source. The rim is slightly everted and dished (possible as lid-seat), and has a r…

Three fragments of probably three different coarseware vessels dating to the medieval period, c . AD 1100-1500. Two of the three fragments are of fairly similar fabric, with extremely large inclusions of possible gravel temper, quartz and iron oxide. They are not well sorted and appear irregularly through the surface, giving it an extremely rough texture, although not abrasive enough to be considered as possible mortaria. They are micaceous, and one (the base fragment) has sooting on the exterior surface. They are both inconsistently fired with darker external surfaces and redde…

An assemblage of 20 ceramic sherds from a variety of different vessels dating from the late medieval to post medieval periods, c. AD 1450-1750. The assemblage comprises five rims, one handle and one base, and the remainder of the sherds are non-diagnostic body sherds. In terms of fabric types and groups there are: Three fragments of a mid grey ware with a reddish core and coated with a speckled greenish glaze. Two are body sherds but one is a base sherd from a plate or platter. This greenish speckling is suggestive of a late medieval date. Five fragments of a mid…

A small assemblage of five sherds of ceramic vessels dating from the Roman period, c. AD 100-410. There are three diagnostic sherds, all rim sherds, the remaining two sherds are body sherds. The first rim is of a pale red fabric with a central pale grey core. It is micaceous and slightly soapy in texture, with a darker red applied colour coat on the outer side, suggestive of Oxfordshire colour coated ware. The rim itself is damaged but subtle, and does not extend unduly beyond the body of the vessel, which was likely a small jar. It weighs 11.65g. The second rim is of…

A large fragment of the pedestal base of a vessel, probably a jug, dating to the Roman period, c. AD 240-350. The fabric is a bright red with a paler and more grey-ish central core. There are multiple iron inclusions and it is highly micaceous. There is a colour coating in a deeper red which survives in some small areas on the base and sides. There is a suggestion of an incised linear decoration around the outer side of the base. It is reminiscent of forms of Oxfordshire colour coated ware, although more reddish in colour, with the shape appearing similar to SUR-36E422. …

A single large fragment of Roman tile, dating to c. AD 100-400. The fragment is rectangular in shape, with three broken edges, it is flattened on both sides, although one side is markedly smoother and more finished. It is formed of a bright red-orange fabric with micaceous inclulsions which is consistently fired. While this may be caused by post depositional bioturbation, there is nonetheless a slender rounded straight channel on one surface. A fragment of a coarseware ceramic vessel dating to the Roman period, c. AD 100-400. The fragment is a rim sherd in a bright orange-red fabric which is micaceous and has sparsely distributed very fine dark inclusions, although in the breaks are voids that appear to have been the positions of larger inclusions that are now lost. It has been consistently fired, and the surface is much pitted and marked due to its relative softness. From the outward curving shape of the rim, it appears to have been an open vessel, such as a dish or platter. Measurements: 44.8mm length,…
