A complete copper-alloy harness fitting terret ring of Late Iron Age to Early Roman date, c.100 BC - AD 100.
The terret is of the 'simple' type, comprising a circular basal strap bar flanked by two circular collars. A D-shaped sectioned loop extends to either side of the collars. The metal is worn and has a light green patina.

Three arms protude from the body, two transversely and one from the underside. The underside arm is missing completely with remnants of the other two curving downward from the body. An unusual porcine fitting of the insular La Tène tradition, probably dating from the 1st century BC to 1st century AD. It is possible this fitting is for a vessel, but it is so far unparalleled in type. There are two other ‘head’ fittings known (OXON-6E3722 and HESH-06696B), but they are very different in design, and this find does not appear to be related to them.
The lack of the portrayal of tusks, a hint of a dorsal ridge and large, pointed, forward facing ears are not definitive enough to label this example a wild boar, and so it is classed as a porcine of mix…

An incomplete copper alloy terret ring of Iron Age to Roman date, c. 100 BC - AD100.
The broad circular sectioned loop survives, but the strap bar is now missing, as are any decorative collars attached to it. The loop is markedly thicker on its enclosed side. There are traces of red enamel decoration, which appears to have been placed in two linear bands either side of a raised copper alloy ridge which lies in the centre of the upper face. The reverse also bears some red enamel traces, although no clear decorative scheme can be made out.
An example of Lewis (2015:87)'s simp…

Iron Age copper alloy bow brooch of uncertain type, possibly La Tène I, dated to c. 400 – 300BC
The cast bow is incomplete, missing both the spring and foot (with a surviving length of 28.7mm a depth of 13.8mm and a weight of 3.5g). The missing spring is represented by one incomplete coil and narrowed at the break (with a diameter of 1.4mm and suggesting a spring diameter of 8.0mm). The bow is of sub-circular section and is arched, gradually widening and thickening to the top of the arch (with a width and thickness of 4.8mm and 4.2mm respectively). The bow is worn, corroded an…

A copper alloy ring thought to be of late prehistoric to Roman date, c. 200 BC to AD 410.
The ring is circular in plan and in cross section, and is a markedly consistent dark green and shiny patina, accordant with a date in this period. A large number of such rings are recorded on the database, including SUR-D4AB2B, SOM-7EDF21, WILT-CDE753, HAMP-E3F5BC. They are generally dated either to the late Bronze Age or to the Iron Age/Roman period as for this example. There is a suggestion that they may be related to horse harness, but without clear patterns of wear or their discovery in …

An incomplete knobbed terret ring harness fitting dating to the Iron Age to Roman period, c. AD 1-100.
The object comprises part of the lower loop, and approximately half of the upper loop. The lower loop is flattened in cross section and creates a rectangular shape in plan. It is attached to a rectangular lower plate, from which the thickened ring of the upper loop rises. Ther is a large globular knop present on the outer side of the upper loop. This bears inscribed decoration composed of two opposing diagonal lines which form a saltire.

Object type: SICKLE
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Devon
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy socketed sickle dating from the Early Iron Age, c.800-700 BC. The crescentic blade is 120 mm long, 35 mm wide and 2 mm thick and has a flat mid-rib on both faces defined by a pair of grooves that are 14 mm apart near the socket and taper to a point 12 mm in from the end of the blade. The outer edge of the sickle blade is thinner at 1 mm and sharper, though damaged, than the internal edge which is 1.5 mm thick, but the internal edge is usually considered to be the cutting edge on sickles so this would appear to be a double-bladed tool. The socket is at right angles to…

An incomplete zoomorphic copper alloy vessel mount or escutcheon of probable Iron Age date, c. 50 BC to AD 150.
The object is composed of a flattened plate, which would once have been attached to the vessel. This is sub-circular in shape, almost pointed oval, but the lower portion is either missing or possibly deliberately removed to create a flattened and squared off bottom edge. At the upper point of the oval rises a cylindrical neck, which extends upwards and forwards, broadening and flaring to a broad brow. The neck is decorated with a series of diagonal lines which extend outw…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete cast copper alloy miniature socketed axehead dating to the late Bronze Age to early Iron Age, c. 850 BC to 400 BC.
The axehead is broadly square in shape, parallel sided with the cutting edge barely curving outwards between the two horizontal sides. It tapers from the highest point of the socket to the narrow cutting edge. The socket is damaged and broken, and the original mouth profile does not survive. The area where the socket meets the axehead is broadly rectilinear, with rounded ends. The surface is badly abraded, with a pale green patina covering the majority of…

An incomplete cast copper alloy vessel mount of Late Iron Age- Roman date (c. 100 BC to AD 100).
The object is pentagonal in shape, formed of two plates of 5 rectilinear sides, joined together by a U-shaped connecting surface which is flattened. The two pentagonal sides extend beyond the thickness of the connecting surface, and this has been emphasised on the underside by two incised lines tracing the point at which these two sides join the central surface, demonstrating how they thicken at the nadir of the shape before narrowing again. The pentagonal area has a central hole measur…

An incomplete copper alloy Iron Age brooch probably of La Tene III, Nauheim derivative type, dating to the period c. 100 BC - AD 100 or possibly of an earlier La Tene 1 B or C. The pin, foot, and catchplate are missing and only two of the spring coils remain to one side of the head. The curved bow is oval in cross section, protruding from the spring at a thickness of 2.5mm and immediately thickens to 4.3mm before tapering towards the break. There is a possible incised line down the centre of the front of the bow but this is hard to see in the corrosion.

A fragment of a copper alloy beaded or ribbed bracelet, probably Iron Age in date, c. 200 BC - AD 43. The bracelet is cast into the form of a continuous series of sub-ovate segments, each divided by a narrowed waist, and with a short projection, also sub-oval in cross-section, expanding from one end. Either end terminates in a worn break.
Overall dimensions: length 37.0mm; width 5.8mm; thickness 6.4mm; weight 7.27g.
The fragment closely resembles Iron Age beaded bracelets such as that illustrated by Savory (1976: 105, no. 20), from the Hill fort at Llanmelin, Monmouthshire, h…

Late Iron Age to early Roman copper alloy terret. The terret is oval (sub-circular or D-shaped) in form with an oval ring which is circular in cross section and thinnest and narrowest at the top (4.5mm diameter), widening and thickening evenly down both sides towards the terminals where they are 7.2 and 8.6mm in diameter. The terminals are thickened and widened into almost circular cross-sectioned collars, up to 9.5mm across, and appear plain although any decoration may be lost to wear and corrosion. The bar is oval in section, slightly narrowed and noticably thinned, it appears to wi…

Iron Age copper alloy brooch, probably of La Tene I, B or C type dating to 400 to 200 BC. The brooch has three coils remaining on the right side and the end of the spring appears to bend back over the last coil suggesting an internal chord although this might be damage. The initial part of the spring has straightened but the junction with the bow is marked by a thickening. The plain bow is circular in cross section, swelling towards the centre and highly arched. The foot bends out at 90 degrees to the end of the bow and is very worn, plain, solid and flat with the end bent over. This …
