A base silver Roman radiate of Gordian III (AD 238-44), with the reverse of a piece of Philip I (AD 244-9), dating to the period c. AD 244-249 (Reece Period 12). Hybrids, with obverses and reverses from different reigns, are quite common in this period. Some of these pieces are regular, but this piece appears to be quite base so could well be a contemporary copy. The piece cited in RIC was found on the Kathleen Kenyon excavations of Verulamium T…

Robertson 2000, 96 no. 437: ""In April, 1922, a man happening to climb to a recess or shallow cave in the cliff above the East Wood, Ashover, found a coin of reddish colour, which, however, was broken in cleaning and was thrown away. Two of his sons and another boy climbed to the place, which is difficult of access, on June the 18th, and found about forty more." The coins were confiscated as treasure trove by the local policeman who "climbed to the site of the hoard, and was rewarded by the discovery of a silver ring, which I exhibit and think that it bears traces of letters upon …

Robertson 2000, 97 no. 440: ""Early in May 1939 a gang of men was excavating a trench for the laying of conduit for telephone cables in Malvern Road in the Brockwell district of Chesterfield, when, after digging through between one and two feet of clay, they uncovered a number of coins lying in a layer of dark soil. According to a statement made by one of the men, the coins were in a small heap, as though they had originally been in a purse or bag which had subsequently rotted away. It seems fairly certain from inquiries made of the finders, that the total number of coins found wa…

Robertson 2000, 99 no. 452: ""As some labourers were getting stone upon Edge-moor, in Crich Common, Jan. 9, 1788 [sic], they found in digging the surface two or three pieces of Roman coin which they judged to be silver, and looking round with attention they observed an earthen pot, the upper side lying level with the surface of the ground: the pot was broken into many pieces, and as supposed, by the wheel of a carriage passing over it many years ago. Its shape, however, might be ascertained, which they described to me to be widest in the middle, with a long narrow neck, about an in…
